I'd give this book a 3.5 stars. After we had a house fire in 2007, several of my friends, and some people I didn't know but who heard about us, donated clothes and items to help us get started again. I swear I could feel the love and comfort that some of the most basic of items gave off simply because they had been donated out of generosity. Since then, I love nosing about thrift shops and often wonder about who the original owner of the items were and what their story was.

Sort of like the indie version of Runaways with less superheroes and more angst. The book is a collection of a 12-issue comic series about teens with strange powers that they barely understand or control. It's a mixed bag -- some of the stories are great and I want to read them over and over again (particularly "Emmy" and "Mixtape") and others are weaker ("One Shot Don't Miss" and "Mon Dernier Jour Avec Toi (My Last Day with You) come to mind"). I like that most of them raise more questions than they answer, and that so many tell the story in pictures than words. Good stuff.

This book will pull at your heart strings. The ending especially. You will love and hate the mother when you read the story. I love how the author builds the characters and their relationship in the story. My only suggestion is make sure you have a box of kleenex with you.

** spoiler alert ** I learned from this book that there's someone out there for us. And that we should not think that we are not beautiful and that we are not worth loving after a broken relationship or after losing someone special in our life. We will find love and love will find us no matter what happened in our life. This is a book of hope, love, courage and moving on. We move on for the people who love us. Moving on means accepting what happened. So for those who lost someone special in their life, read this book.
I bought this for J Fiction and one of my coworkers read it and thought it might be better in YA. Need to read it to find out. Now that I've read it, I kind of agree. My coworker lived during this time of polio paranoia, and that part of the book really could be kind of scary for kids. Georgie's family moves to a new neighborhood, and the next door neighbor - a beautiful high school girl - is in an iron lung due to polio. She seduces Georgie's shy older brother over the course of several months, and Georgie eventually realizes that Phyllis is hoping to persuade Emmett to help her die. Very dark.

I have to say that this is a smart and unique book. I do tend to like the 'short stories' that are somehow connected.

i read most of the middle of this book while smoking dope in a hammock on a beach of a small island in Thailand near the border w/Myanmar. i thought the book was about drugs and music, but other people tell it was DEEP and MEANINGFUL. i doubt that. the surreal shifting landscape appealled to me, especially when i was travelling myself. go to an airport in Hong Kong then wake up in Amsterdam wondering if distance is mere illusion. the book made consider how different the shape of an airplane's flight path is compared to the far more perfect parabolic flight of a rocket.

Does success make a writer preachy? Oh yeah! Great book for exploring the tortuous conflicts of religion and sociology in the backdrop of a very good story. In the aftermath of his terrible war, Ender Wiggin disappeared, and a powerful voice arose: the Speaker for the Dead, who told the true story of the Bugger War. Now, long years later, a second alien race has been discovered by Portuguese colonists on the planet Lusitania. But again the aliens' ways are strange and frightening...again, humans die. And it is only the Speaker for the Dead, who is also Ender Wiggin the Xenocide, who has the courage to confront the mystery...and the truth. Orson Scott Card infuses this tale with intellect by casting his characters in social, religious, and cultural contexts.
