I read this after the whole Oprah scandal... Reason being that even if it is a memoir I don't see the big deal in an artist using a little artistic embellishment to tell a story, and if it caused that much scandal, it must have been good! I actually did really like it, the style was really straightforward, and unique to a lot of the stuff I normally enjoy reading, which is a lot more descriptive. I do see where a lot of people are coming from when I read other's reviews saying that it was completely over-exaggerated and the details of Frey's addiction were outlandish, but I kind of liked that about the book. A lot of his problems did seem to be self constructed, but who hasn't unwittingly made a problem for themselves at one point or another? Digging the hole for yourself doesnt' make the moment you're able to climb out any less admirable. It left me with a good taste in my mouth.

A well done story revealing another aspect of the Holocaust that I was not familiar with.

The beginning of this book was very slow for me. I couldn't wait to get rid of the boyfriend and get Astrid to Gordian like the blurb advertised so that ineresting things could start happening. And then they did, in a big way. Things unfolded slowly, but that was ok. I loved Astrid's relationship with the unicorns and how that changed her and her view on her job as a unicorn hunter. (view spoiler) I really want Astrid to ride off into the sunset with Bucephelus at the end of the series (I assume there will be at least one more book) because I really love their relationship. At times this book felt a bit disjointed, but overall the magic held up for me. I'm looking forward to more of the killer (?) unicorns!

Best so far, for sure. I hear #4 is slow, but I smell good things coming.

Max is written very simply for a variety of readers very easy for read alone but is context fine for the preschooler. Max is excited about all of the holidays he learns about and it is very straight forward and direct. Maybe a little dry but works for a read aloud if no other options. Ages 3+

I wish I could give it more stars! This was such an unexpectedly exciting story to read. It stars off quietly, but once all the children are together, KABLAM! It takes off! I love all the characters too! Even the bad guys. That's proof of an excellent story! I can't wait to read the next two.

Honestly one of the best books I've ever read. I'm having a hard time getting into anything since I've finished this book. It's such a great story, I can't wait for more books from this author. Seriously...read it. If you don't love it, I'll be amazed.
salam
