My favorite Jodi Picoult book. Why was this given to me as a bridal shower gift?? A compelling story of a school shooting and who it directly affects.

I especially enjoyed the way Gaiman blended ancient myths with Christian beliefs. It seemed to be a way of saying that neither is exclusive of the other. The story, itself, was quite engrossing. American Gods contains one of the most unique sets of characters I've encountered in modern literature.

I really enjoyed this; not as much as Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, but, you learn so much about the old culture- some that still carries on today. The main character needed to get some different priorities...

Should be required reading for people. The way the media destroyed the President during his tenure was pathetic and taken our of context. Bush gives his feelings on the difficult choices he faced. One instance is he had Nancy Reagan (supporting stem cell research) and on the other side the Pope (obviously not supporting). How on earth do you decide between the Pope and former President Reagan? For every tough decision he had people giving their opinion and was pulled in opposite directions. Decision Points is eye opening to his preparation and how important standing for integrity and principles was to him. You can't walk away from this without being impressed and respect who George W Bush is as a person and what he faced during his tenure. I agree he isn't the sharpest or most popular President we've had, but with Decision Points you see his heart and his intentions we're not for popularity, but for doing whats right. Not since FDR and Truman has a President faced more difficult decisions as Bush and Decision Points puts things back into context. His chapter on the financial crisis is all one needs to read in order to under what the process was in literally saving us from complete financial meltdown. After reading that final chapter, I have to get it a 5 star. Well worth the read, just for proper perspective if anything.

Fire, named for her hair color, is the last living human monster. Being a monster means she has the power to manipulate other humans' minds, and also that she's dangerously beautiful. Doesn't sound like the worst thing, but somehow it manages to cause her lots of problems. This book is much darker than Graceling. My criticisms are mostly that Fire seems unnaturally sophisticated for her age (17 at the start of the book), a lot of the story was predictable, and the world the author creates is pretty unbelievable (I'm all about fantasy worlds, but this one is ridiculous). But I still really liked it. **Re-read in April 2016 -- this time through I appreciate more the allegory of Fire's monsterness to that of being a woman -- people expect things of her and think she is or should be a certain way because of how she looks, for example, the part where someone says she looks unbelievable sweet when in actuality she feels like death reminds me of men on the street who command women they don't know to smile. Also, her decision not to have children is similar to people today choosing not to pass on their own undesirable heritable traits. But I was extra annoyed this time by the complicated paternities/maternities of all the characters, as well as the poorly executed extraneous plot points (river horse, specifically).
