I really wanted to love this book, and almost felt it, but in the end I was put off enough by the playfulness to only give it four stars, or maybe I should give it three? The other reviews already say what is good and bad about this book, I'll just reiterate some points. The gimmicks get to be a bit much. I love "postmodern" techniques probably more than most people, but some of this felt a bit showy. I wasn't sure how manipulated I felt when I got to the flip book. I know that fiction is inherently manipulative, but it almost felt gratuitous. Putting that aside, I liked the writing; it was funny, sad, touching, and felt genuine for the most part. Oscar was a little annoying at times, but it fit the character. He's a kid; kids can be annoying. Sometimes he feels just a bit too precious, but then a page later he breaks your heart in a way that feels real. So, I'll take the preciousness if brings with it real emotion. So, not a perfect book. It is one that I recommend with reservations. I'm not sure I like all the pictures that feel gimmicky. I'm not sure the subject matter needs gimmicks. Then again, maybe they just seem like gimmicks because at the time The New Republic was telling everybody that they're gimmicks. I like it when Auden and Isherwood include pictures, I like it when Sebald does as well. So I've decided on four stars, because, it's fiction, it's a story; it doesn't always have to take itself so seriously.
