The fact is, Chuck Palahniuk is a one-trick pony. Every single one of his books has the exact same narrator, the exact same condescending, repetitive voice. I found that voice easy to sympathize with (har-har) at first, and that's what drew me to his works in the beginning. I thought it was a strong, jaded voice that makes wonderfully strong, jaded commentaries. That voice became less and less interesting with each book of his that I read, until this one, when I finally looked at it and saw the pretentious, repetitive, whiny voice that it really is. It doesn't help that the author I immediately read before Palahniuk was Asimov and his clean, straightforward writing. The contrast was laughably drastic. I picture Asimov to be this affable uncle who sits on a simple wooden chair in the middle of a well-lit room, and tells you a story. I picture Palahniuk to be the 30-something guy with slicked hair who tells a story by first turning off all the lights, building a bonfire in the middle of the room and then shines a flashlight in his face before telling you a story with a weird, fake voice. Anyway, Lullaby itself has a stupid plot and stupid characters. I persisted through it mostly because it was very short, and with the amount that Palaniuk repeats himself I can pretty much skip through half of the pages without missing anything. I thought perhaps the ending would bring a bang of a revelation to all the nonsense that preceded it, because other books I've read by him tend to have sensational endings. Well, the ending was sensational in a way, but only in the stupidity department. I'm officially removing Palahniuk from the list of authors that I read.

Something Strange and Deadly by Susan Dennard was a fun zombie novel set against the vivid backdrop of nineteenth century Philadelphia. Since I don’t like gory zombie novels, it was great that for the most part, the zombies in Something Strange and Deadly were corpses under the control of a mysterious necromancer. However, because the book does involve zombies, I really liked that at least one important character didn’t escape in one piece after being chomped on by a rabid zombie. Usually, characters in the zombie novels I’ve read either manage to survive with minimal damage or are killed outright. My favourite thing about Something Strange and Deadly was its protagonist, Eleanor. It was easy to like her because she was spunky, sensible, and determined to find her brother regardless of the social expectations placed upon her. Moreover, although Eleanor took some risks, she never appeared as stupid or reckless. I also liked the subtle romance between Eleanor and Daniel. Their chemistry never felt forced to me, and it was refreshing to have a paranormal story where there was no outright declaration of love.

I wasn't expecting much but the story was incredible. I felt like I was part of the story, suffering and surviving. Makes me want to hoard canned goods and winter clothes!

please see my review of A Light In The Attic
This book was incredible! Thank you both so much for recommending it. The book described her illness perfectly. I laughed at some points and cried at the end. I would recommend it to anyone.

This book starts out ok, but the whole thing seems to ride on one gory scene that, once over, doesn't get developed into anything terribly satisfying. I dunno, maybe there are layers here that my easy, suburban upbringing doesn't allow me to understand, but I'm fairly certain the book is just average.
