Often sequels don't hold up as well as the originals. This book proves that notion wrong. In many ways, I appreciate "Magician's Ward" better than "Mairelon the Magician:" the world is expanded, the rules of magic are interestingly and well-defined, the romance is just ripping (I'm always a sucker for scenes of heroes drunkenly brooding), and the mix of high and low society in this alternate Regency England is well-explored. The only shame is that there is no third book...hmmm, Ms. Wrede?

Maybe my favorite of the series. This is the only one involving Earth. Brittany, a six foot tall, blue collar construction worker with dreams of one day building her own house, falls for Dalden the moment she sees him. Dalden, son of Tedra from book 1 and brother of Shanelle from book 2, is on Earth trying to track down a criminal who intends on taking over the planet. A little ridiculous, but it was okay, with fewer truly infuriating scenes than the previous two books. I'm a strong feminist at heart, I guess--even though I did really enjoy this series, part of me was hoping for something more in this book. Seeing Brittany truly rebel against the male-dominated culture would have been really satisfying. The culture in question is just so ridiculously patriarchal that I would have liked for one woman in the series to genuinely reject it and make her domineering husband's life hell when he tries to work her round. I liked Dalden as a character, but I hated his culture more.

What an amazing book. King also does extremely well with the theology. A good read, a great story, hard to put down.
LOVED this book! I love JM and Xhex together. I thought it was interesting what started happening with Lash, weird...but I'm just glad he's gone now. The Blay/Quinn storyline was by far the best part of the book for me though. I can't wait for their story!
Not my favorite fantasy book, but the message is nice. Freedom to practice magic is a good thing for a wizard!

One of my favorite romance novels of all time. I used to lend this one out so much that I eventually lost it to a friend. But I never forgot the title.

Technically, I guess people would view this as a "chick book." But hey, I picked it up, read it, and actually enjoyed it. So there is at least one heterosexual male out there who likes this book. And no, I don't listen to eat tofu, listen to Coldplay, or watch Friends. As the title clearly indicates, it's about stepping into another person's shoes and sort of trying to see what their life is like and why life works for them a certain way. The book features two sisters that are completely opposites. One sister does something terrible and well, they spend most of the book apart. But as they try to figure out stuff on their own, they grow as people. It's a good, quick, easy read. But it has enough deeper family themes for people to pick up on. A movie was eventually made based on this novel and it was solid as well. I recommend both, especially to women with sisters.
Pop is a great book about a past College and NFL star who played on defense. Although this book is fiction, it still offers true facts about the glory of playing football, and the painful after effects. A kid named Marcus Jordan just moved from his old town to a new one with his mom. He was the junior varsity quarterback at his old school and comes into a small community where football is everything. The football team at the local high school went undefeated the year before and want to keep it that way, making it hard for Marcus to get many shots at playing. He works all summer to get ready for football on his own by throwing through a tire swing and things like that at a local park. While throwing one day his throw is caught by a very athletic man in his fifties, who's name Marcus would find out was Charlie Popovich. He and Jordan would throw the ball for the whole summer and Charlie would teach Marcus how to take and deliver hits. Charlie played for the Bengals and the San Diego Chargers in his pro years and called hitting someone good "hearing the Pop." Marcus would use these new skills to help him with his game and move into the starting line up. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves sports and drama. I liked how this book showed how although football is fun to both play and watch, the after effects can be devastating.
This was the first time I read H.P. Mallory and really enjoyed the book. I wasn't sure about Jolie at first but warmed up to her. She reminds me of a Bridget Jones with super natural powers. Unsure of herself with out her powers and even more unsure of herself with her powers. I love Rand. Who wouldn't love a Warlock who looks like a Roman god? His character is standoff-ish with Jolie but you can sense the conncection between them.
I didn't even read two pages. I've loved others by Vreeland and others in this genre. Did not capture my interest one iota.
