Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson is a fiction that deals with teenager problem. The main character, Melinda is an outcast at school after one incident at house party. She called the police at the party so some people got in trouble and even her best friends start to hate her. She is afraid to tell the truth and tries to avoid IT which is the reason why she called a police at the party. In this book, a ‘tree’ is the important part of Melinda’s life. A tree symbolizes herself. At first, according to Mr. Freeman, her tree doesn’t have a life, but then after she overcomes with her problem, it gets a new life. The title ‘speak' has significant meaning which is related to Melinda’s situation. In her situation, to overcome the problem she has to ‘speak’ but she was afraid to face the truth. However, later she ‘speaks’ and it solves the problem. The length of this book is 198 and language is not that complicated. It contains little bit of teenager’s slang but it isn’t hard to understand. I really enjoyed reading this book, and actually this book became my favorite book in my life. Since it deals with familiar topic which is teen problem, it was more interesting and easy to understand. Throughout this book, I have learned lots of things. It helps me to think back about myself and how to cope with the problem. I would recommend this book to everyone especially teenagers since this story is basically about teenager. Also I would recommend this book to adults because I believe if they read this book, it will be easier to understand their children.

Kutipan yang paling berkesan : “It’s my music box! It’s very high-tech—powered by some new kind of tiny everlasting battery. Plutonium, I think." Langsung terbayang dengan iPod bertenaga nuklir :P So, what is right? what is wrong?

Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect of A Northern Light. I rarely read historical fiction set in the States. I borrowed this from the library only because Donnelly’s other novel, Revolution, is receiving a lot of critical acclaim. However, I was not disappointed in the least. Mattie was a strong heroine. She had to deal with raising her sisters after her mother died and her brother left. Yet she still dreamed of going to college in New York City and becoming a writer. Because women often didn’t receive higher learning in 1906, you could say that there was a feminist undertone. But not in an in-your-face kind of way. All the side characters had depth and were likeable as well. I praise Donnelly for not sugarcoating any of the issues presented, such as racism and marital infidelity. Everything about this book was raw and honest. I don’t think I’ve ever used the work “raw” to describe writing before, but in this case it’s the best word I can use. This was not at all a “light” or “fun” read. My only criticism is that there were too many plot lines going on at once. Donnelly could have taken out the murder and still have had a good story about a young woman with aspirations but who is tied to her family by a promise. In fact, I had to drag myself through the chapters in which Mattie read over Grace’s letters, because I longed to be back in Mattie’s story. Overall this was a very good book. I was happy with the outcome and the ending was satisfying. I’d recommend A Northern Light to anyone who likes YA historical fiction. Needless to say, I’ll be sure to check out Revolution soon to get more of this wonderful author.

One of the first McDevitt stories I read - still a favorite. I love the whole concept of finding an alien craft buried in a cornfield.

** spoiler alert ** The McKaskel family is looking for a new start away from the east coast. Leaving their relatives behind, the young family packs up their belongings and joins one of the many journeys westward across the America frontier. However due to an outbreak of disease, they leave their wagon train and start to make their own way through the wild country. Fighting the weather, local wildlife, Native Americans, and a gang of horse-stealing outlaws, the MacKaskels were not prepared for how wild the west really is. However, they meet the drifting frontiersman, Con Villian, and he begins helping them for reasons unknown. Maybe he just likes a good cup of coffee or maybe he wants to be alone in the company of Mrs. McKaskel. In the grays of the western sky, lands, and people, Villian knows the most shades. As the journey continues the trail grows ever more dangerous as the McKaskels are pursued by Doc Shabbitt and his gang of bandits, some of whom think there is gold in the McKaskel wagon and others whom want to have some time alone with Mrs. McKaskel. The young family is unaccustomed to being alone in a lawless land. They may be in more danger with Villian but without him, the McKaskels will surely die, unknown and alone.
