This book paints a painful picture of the AIDS epidemic as it unfolded in the early 1980's. It chronicles the despair felt by sufferers and researchers alike as their pleas for help went unheeded. It is incredibly dense and took me a very long time to read, otherwise I would most definately reread it frequently. I will have to stick to rewatching the movie, which is also incredibly good.

This book was fantastic. It is a story about two young Jewish cousins, one schooled in fine art and trained in the particulars of Houdini escape, smuggled from Prague to America in 1939, just as the Jews began truly fearing what the Nazi party might do to them. The other is a New York kid (19 years old, but written as more of a teen than adult), with an entrepreneur's spirit and big dreams of creating his own comic book heroes at a time when comic books were just beginning to take hold of the country. Within hours of meeting, they set out to create a comic book empire based around the adventures of The Escapist, a magician of sorts dedicated to freeing the people enslaved by Nazis while bringing Hitler to his knees. Both boys are living out complex fears and dreams and secret desires through the characters they create - in particular Joe who is desperately fighting to bring his family to America with his earnings - and the story is fantastically well crafted. I know little about early 1940's New York, so at times it is a slow read (the amount of information about comic book production and the subtle effects of the war on the New York public is remarkable), but I keep finding myself completely mesmerized by the story - responding audibly to shock or sadness and then laughing at myself for being so utterly entwined with the direction of the characters. It's almost like stepping into a vintage Superman comic, yet behind the scenes, seeing it from an entirely different angle, given light onto the limitations and fabrications of such a monumental craft. I can't believe I'm raving about a book about comic books - but honestly, there is a stark difference between mediocre writing and the story telling of a Pulitzer Prize winning author. I am floored by this novel.

My friend Kevin recommended this to me one day when we were in the book section of Uwajamaya in the ID (Seattle). He said it's one of the best books he has ever read. I tabled it for about 8 months now - trying to get through a stack of "loans" from friends. I read the first 10 pages out of curiousity. It's not a long read: 250 pages or so. Looks very very good. Hard to put down in bed good.

Fun, quick read about dealing with the changes that come with growing up. There's a fantastical element in that children in this family are hit with a magic-like ability -- or savvy -- on their thirteenth birthday, adding to the difficulties of becoming teenagers. That said, I wouldn't really consider it well within the fantasy genre. I loved the cast of characters. It'd be fun to meet the Beaumonts.
