Back when I was a teenager, exploring the things teenagers explore, this was one of the first books on the topic I somehow found. I don't remember how it came to my attention, but I'm still glad it did. Look, it is what it is. It's an erotic novel from the 90s and in some ways it's very much a product of both. It's not going to win any literary awards. However, it is actually quite well written, well paced, and nicely plotted. There is a enough of a story to keep it from being merely a series of sexy sketches. I don't love the characters, but I like them. I think Genevieve makes sense and has a realistic evolution. The sexy situations are varied, using fantasy and performances by other couples to bring variety. There is M/f, F/m, F/f, and M/m in varying forms. The protagonist is almost definitely bisexual (despite some reasoning to the contrary) and gay people throughout the book are depicted in a positive light. The differences between fun BDSM play and harmful abuse are clearly explained without being preachy lessons in the lifestyle. I know I'm devoting a lot of space to this, but it was one of the first books like it I ever read, and it does hold up. It's sexy, it's imaginative, and it's strangely romantic. If you are looking for a steamy read that isn't insipid, abusive, or generally poorly written, I can recommend this novel.
Even though this is a great book, it's my least favorite of the series by far even after mutiple readings. We learn only a few things that continue the Voldemort plot and it feels liek the least satisfying of the bunch. That said it just makes you want to read the rest that much more.

This is the first in the series I've read, and I'm sorry I didn't run across Edwards earlier. The Lake District is an unusual setting, one that makes me want to read the others in the series. I liked the characters, both the good guys and the bad guys. They seemed like real people who have made choices they live with daily. And I'm dying to visit a residential library. How cool would that be?
This book for me was a little bit better than okay. (I'd go with 2.5 stars) I think I was frustrated with the narrator. She wasn't very believable to me and not even because she was a 6'2" bisexual magical tattooist with a deathhawk. I thought all of that gave her a distinct personality. However, her speech and actions just didn't fit. One minute she'd be telling someone to f-off and the next she'd be crying over something that seemed ludicrous. I don't know, I felt she was way too manly and I really don't think it fit her (when I say manly, I really mean the way she thought). The author being a man, I think he did not have the best insight into the female mind (even if she was a bisexual). Plus, it took me little bit to figure out she was a bisexual which was frustrating because he doesn't come out and say it until later. The sexual orientation of a character shouldn't confuse the reader, it's kind of an important attribute in the character development section. Also, I couldn't get a feel in my mind for the rest of her body and how she looked (except for the tattoos covering her body) and that also bothered me. Lastly, I thought that her male love interest was ridiculous because he was this short guy who, albeit manly, was in the end, still short. Most girls, bisexual or not, would prefer someone taller. If you are going out with a female, that's different (for reasons unexplainable), but men are men. I don't know, I was just frustrated all around. But, there were some redeeming qualities. Like the scene where she finally does a magical tattoo. I believe that was my very favorite scene in the whole book. Or the part where we get to see her skindance and watch what the magical tattoos can actually do. I think though, overall, this book was lacking development in the characters and background. We know that the narrator refuses to talk to her father, but we don't know much else (like why???). We don't know much about her past at all except she has an ex-girlfriend who comes into the story later. All the missing background and development made her a kind of flat character for me who in the end I just didn't get. (this book was given to me courtesy of the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This in no way affected my opinion of the book)
An awesome read for those interested in women's issues, abortion, controversy or Western New York.
I can't imagine any way he could have made this better. Beah and I were born the same year, so when he would mention exact dates, I could frequently remember what I was doing on that day. It was a strange experience, realizing that this was going on while I was at camp, freaking out about a boy, or at a Halloween party. These were powerful realizations. It made me feel really spoiled.

This is the kind of book I think I'm not supposed to admit that I enjoyed but I would be lying if I didn't say that it made the bus ride to and from work a lot more enjoyable.
Good book with interesting topics I really enjoyed it.
