4 stars, but the movie version was pretty bad, so watch out.

I had to read this for nostalgia's sake, since I loved the Jack Ryan books in middle/high school. It was ok, not great. Typical good guys v. bad guys type stuff--although updated to be against Islamic terrorists, rather than the Soviet baddies of Jack Ryan Sr's era.
The historical setting and the Scottish Highland culture of the 16th century kept me going in this book. The sexual scenes and the torture scenes are a bit too graphic for my liking or I would have given it 5 stars. Having said that, however, it is a very good book and well worth reading. The character development is exemplary and that alone will keep me reading the others in the series.

This is a REAL history book. Im pretty upset at myself for not have taken a class with Ronald Takaki while I attended Berkeley. This should be a high school text book. Although there are many truths to people's histories and as the author mention not everyone's histories are presented in this book. If you ever wonder why a group of people are in this land, this is the book to reveal that and much more. This book exposes the truths of the atrocities committed to native people, language, culture and environment. It talks about slave-trade, Irish, women, Chicanos, Chinese, and many more his/her-stories of oppressed groups in U.S. American land.

This is the seminal word on ADD and the author is the leading mind on diagnosis and treatment. Very easy to read and understand, and provides great information on skill training and therapy to overcome ADD, does not only recommend medication.
Please don't judge this book by its hologram cover. Unless of course you really love holograms. In 1984, a big city artist moves to a small town in Iowa and decides take pictures of all 679 of its inhabitants. Then he decides to take photographs of those same residents again in 2005-07. The personal stories of these people are so affecting and interesting and the portrait photography is marvelous. This is a quick read, but I already feel like going back through it even though I've just finished it. This may be one to buy.
Modern comic gothic, as much as anything else. Set in Whitby and kind of like... Okay, if you've read Last Tango in Aberystwyth, what that is for noir, this is for gothic, except generally milder. Not as twisted, but that kind of thing. It felt more like it should have been a series and a longer one at that, so I won't be surprised to see a few more. Pretty easy to put down and pick up. Although it's not a perfect book, there are some nice little touches -I'm particularly fond of the aliens- and I'll most likely pick up any sequels.

other reviews have called this book shocking, raw and gritty, but the only thing shocking about it to me was the pretense. self-indulgent, all angst and no breath of fresh air anywhere along the way. there were some humorous moments and it's certainly not the worst book i've ever read, but i wouldn't recommend it to anyone. didn't give me anything new to think about and nothing was said in a different or unique way.

I gave this book three stars but would have preferred to fit it somewhere in between a 2 and a 3. Gerritsen writes some good stuff, always full of twists and turns. This one is not her best effort, in my opinion, but still a decent read. Maura (a recurring character) Isles is a medical examiner. She returns from a trip to find her house surrounded by police (some of whom she knows through her office) examining a body that they thought was hers. the mystery begins.. how could there be someone who looks so much like her and was she murdered in front of the house as a message to her? One of my pet peeves is when a writer resorts to something I like to refer to as "personal involvement" as a "deus ex machina" to proper the plot forward. This is what ruined many of the most popular cop television programs of the 70's... The Rookies - Kate Jackson's nurse character invevitably was trying to help someone who turned out to either be the bad guy or related. Gerritsen chooses this cheap trick to move this story forward... While the story remains scary, frightening, etc. this annoying tactic continues to nag at me through the conclusion.. robbing me of the complete joy I should have experienced for watching this mystery unfold.

A quick 15 minute pick me upper, if you are feeling low, just get this out and you will be on your way. I love President Uchtdorf and he always makes me feel happy after I listen to him or read what he has written.
