** spoiler alert ** Oh my goodness, this book was soooo good. At times, Abbey made me so angry but I loved her! I loved the strong friendship the Gray Widows had. They were so cute and hilarious. I knew KNEW! that Abbey was going to give her mom her money. I felt so horrible for her. I hoped that she would finally talk to her dad and was glad when she did. I loved everything about this book and would definately recommend it.

In addition to the author's primary mission of giving women a venue to speak out and share the stories of their abortions, there is a good chapter on the role of feminists in the pro-life movement and the need to bridge gaps, with recommendations of how they could better support women who choose to continue their pregnancies.

My favorite excerpt: "I did not give to anyone the responsibility for my life. It is mine, I made it. And can do what I want to with it. Live it. Give it back, someday, without bitterness, to the wild and weedy dunes."

Diana speaks forthrightly and honestly about the changes she's experienced as she's aged. She is at this writing 89. She speaks of the ebbing of sex, when to stop driving her car, the deaths of those she knew and her hopes for her own passing. She found that taking classes was enjoyable, and the she has few regrets. Gardening still gives her great pleasure though it is more difficult. I enjoyed her book and expect that I will reread it in about 10 years.

Although the title says "European Muslim," the book has no doubt valuable insights for us Americans/Canadians and in fact any Muslims living as "minorities" (only in number of course and not status). Yea, I really miss my copy of this book since Br. Mohamed Sheibani has it and will not return it ;)
I liked this much better than Love Medicine - so think of this as a 3.5 star review! The Beet Queen is located in something like the same physical space as Love Medicine, but instead of standing on the rez looking out, we're standing in the nearby town, occasionally looking in. There are a handful of overlapping characters, but what makes this book so fresh and alive is that the perspective of the book is so very different from the last. We get a sense of the hostility between town and reservation, between white and Indian - not in large acts of hate, but in small snubs and quite conversations. What it means to be Indian in a world that pays Indians so little heed is marvelously explored. I think what I loved most about this book is that it makes the case that broken families and addictions and errant children are universal experiences, not the prerogative of any single race. Again, the point's made quietly, over several hundred pages, but the end is inescapable. It's beautifully done. I wish that some of the loose ends had been tied - one in particular; a character who returns to the border town but whose actions there don't really get written. But still, it was a pleasure to spend time inside this book, even if some of the characters are so wrung out with meanness I would like to cheerfully punch them in the head.

I stared reading this when the guy I was dating at the time was reading it for his drama class in college. I like the structured self-help aspect of Julia Cameron's creative process, because sometimes being creative feels like such an overwhelming task that one doesn't know where to begin when stuck. The daily writing was tough for me, mostly because I can type faster than I can write. I LOVE the Artist Dates concept, and it has helped me balance my work vs. life energy.

Just wow. I would give this book six stars. This is the first book of Ian McEwan's I've read. I just finished it and I am feeling sad that I can never read it again for the first time. I bet I'll read it again, though. There were many passages that just made me stop and read them again, and made me want to mark the page or tell someone about it. It's a beautiful book.

There are not enough stars for this one. Wow! How did Jaycee do it? How does someone in this kind of situation persevere? If you do read this, one you won't be able to put it down and two, this is not a book for anyone who cannot handle the absolute desolate corruption of a young woman's life. It describes situations none of us should ever have to encounter and the author does not hold back - as she should not. This book proved to me that writing is therapeutic and we all have a story to tell. There is someone out there that Jaycee has helped, one pinecone at a time.
