This was a great read, very educational and articulated some key things about food choices and impact on the environment that I had thought, but didn't know how to say. I would recommend this to everyone, and I plan to start visiting my farmers market more often!

I'm reading The Believers right now. I'm so glad she came out with a new book. Zoe Heller is an amazing writer. A social satire, a must-read.
Great book. A classic, must read. Also!! The leader of the book people is named Granger. I bet if he had a daughter she would be a book worm know-it-all like Hermione. I bet J.K. Rawling thought so too...

This book would have been okay MINUS the whole fantasy/dream element. Which, I realise the fantasy thing was the whole point of the book, but it made the story REALLY, REALLY confusing and also was TOTALLY NOT NECESSARY to the story. This would have been an interesting read if the story was only focusing on the characters and the society they were living in. Add in the basilisk thing (which I still don't understand...) and the book SUCKED.

Ms Jelinek won a Noble Prize in Literature in 2004. This is a hard read, or so it seemed to me, so you can feel free to go directly to the movie. The book was first published in 1983 and was made into a film - which one three major prizes at the Cannes 200l Festival including a best actor & actress award. It is a movie that is almost exactly like the book but not quite as tortuous. The main character, a piano teacher, is quite an unattractive character with some strange interests so this may appeal to those who like the unusual cast. The Nobel committee (I quote here) awarded her the prize "for her musical flow of voices and counter-voices and plays that with extraordinary linguistic zeal reveal the absurdity of society's cliches and thier subjugating power...."
Loved the first 3/4 of the book, then it started to get a little dull and repetitive.

This book scared the daylights out of me. It captures what a society could very well look like for women if the governemnt and church keep chipping away at our rights as human beings. It's both dark and funny, and Atwood's message might just be foreshawdowing times to come.

When Oscar-buzz swirled about the movie adaptation of Winter's Bone, I sprung to watch it. The story was alright, the acting was great, but I felt like something was missing. Something in the plot seemed unexplained or under-detailed. So a few months later I took the opportunity to find out what it was when I picked up this book from the library. I quite literally flew through it, all the while hoping it would fill that void I had felt watching the film. I guess because I already knew how the story turned out, I wasn't as entertained as I was hoping to be or probably should have been. That being said, I did enjoy it -- much more than the movie, in fact. Woodrell's poetic speech is captivating and picturesque, defining the backdrop of the story in beautiful metaphors and adjectives rather than for what it really was - rough, tumble, and full of ugliness. Ree is a great protagonist. Her role was developed much more in the writing than was portrayed on-screen and though her attitude is palpable and her choices were not always wise, she is someone to be marveled at and on some level admired. When I saw this was Woodrell's 8th novel, (evidenced in the back sleeve) I was curious to know if all of his writing deals with these mystery-settings. The intrigue was there, but unfortunately I had previously spoiled that for myself. Perhaps another Ozark-themes mystery will satisfy more fully.

This tome is often said to be the Japanese "Bible"- of course, it is really nothing of the sort, and if read it expecting that you'll be a bit surprised. In form, it is more similar to Aesop's Fables. The books consists of some basic myths of Japanese Shintoism, and the stories are often entertaining and full of bodily fluids, all of which produce hundreds of gods. A nessecary text for anyone studying religion or Japan.

Again I'm very partial to my books and the characters I've created. Alex, Sam, Jessie and Cyn have become very dear to me and you will find a few more characters in this installment that will be a huge influence on the story line in the following installments. This story picks up where Taylorwood left off and not wanting to give any spoilers you can read parts on Amazon.com. Thanks, G L McCarthy
