4-4.5 I really enjoyed this book. I think that the story is progressing well and I really like the Searcher's and am looking forward to seeing where things go from here. I was slightly frustrated at times with the relationship between Shay & Calla. Couldn't stand the flirting that went on between him and Adne and more then a little irritated that Calla didn't stand up and say anything. I'm really looking forward to the next book! :)

Overall I found this book disappointing. Not so much due to the topics covered, but I didn't really think it was a memoir. Rape, abortion and battery were some of the hard topics covered, along with women and the media; the basis or beginnings of feminism and feminist authors. The whole era of this feminist movement can be summed up by the authors own words "suffered from burnout and divisive internal struggles stemming from the usual problems endemic to all movements for social change - theoretical disputes, personaility differences, ego trips and power plays" - women were too busy fighting among themselves. The author seems to think the headway made in rape and abortion is complete, but are still two topics discussed today as requiring further discussion, debate and activisim. Quotes through the book remind you however of just how far things have come. "Imagine a time - or summon it back into memory - when a husband was required to countersign a wife's application for a credit card, a bank loan, or automobile insurance, when psychiatrists routinely located the cause of an unsatisfactory sex life in the frigid, castrating, ball breaking female partner, when abortion was an illegal, back-ally procedure, when rape was the woman's fault, when nobody dared talk about the battery that went on behind closed doors, or could file a complaint about sexual harrassment." The advocates for women's sufferage in the late 1800s and early 1900s along with these women in the 1960s and 1970s have brought us to a point we need to make sure to maintain and continue forward. An excellent story! I thought this was a very good book, especially for someone of such few years. I didn't feel the story was as derived as many have said. The movie, on the other hand, was terrible.

Patterened after Tocqueville's "Democracy in America", Carey's characters are off on an 1800s adventure of discovering their variant Americas. A reading of Tocqueville's work prior to Carey's would have been helpful in catching his many plays off of that piece. And a love of early American history would help keep the reader awake during some of the slower moments. Not as good as Carey's "Oscar and Lucinda" but extremely well written none-the-less.

A thumbnail overview of Ramses II. Easy to read - but not meant to be in any depth.

Not a book I would normally read but it was entertaining and provided education on the 1930's traveling circus scene.

The great starting place to learn Oregon politics.
This audio book contains archetypal stories or fables that help one to understand the origin of the “Stone Child,” whom is anyone that did not grow a child because of their experiences at a young age. It is helpful to anyone that wants to understand early childhood experiences as pattern-setting and how to move beyond such boundaries. The stories are sometimes a little slow and detailed, but the broad picture contained in them is quite touching.
