Probability Angels by Joseph Devon - a Goodreads First Read free giveaway book won on February 28nd, received on March 16th. Probability Angels is about Matthew, a non-lowlife, come what may, Alfie type who is an interdimensional afterlife Adjustment Bureau-like worker for profit. Any contact he has with anyone has the ability to shift a moment of someone's life or their entire life and then, ta-da, money appears for him to collect. The dialogue, characters, and description are simple enough to grasp - it's just the construction of these that makes the book hard to follow and easier to just scan through. When Matthew's pre-death wife and daughter's lives become his to amend and he begins to travel the world with other afterlife cohorts, the book becomes alot more complicated. Eventually, there are new characters introduced when you've just barely met ones from the chapter before, all while they speak and interact in a casual, witty manner about concepts that come about very quickly and only seem to make sense for the world that the book describes. All in all, it was okay. There is definetely an audience for this sort of book, but my brain must be too closed to the idea of someone's fate being changed by someone already dead. However, if Matthew were to somehow try to change my mind by bumping into me on my commute to work, I have a feeling it would probably earn him about $2.75 in quarters.

The book, Big Fish, by Daniel Wallace is a story about Edward Bloom, a very adventurous man, in his eyes. Since he is ill, he is being taken care of by his son, William Bloom, and proceeds to tell him numerous stories about the adventures of his life. Some of the adventures include Ginny Hills, a woman he meets and falls in love with during his travels. People who are very adventurous and outgoing may enjoy this book because of the stories that Edward tells; however, I did not enjoy this book because it was a bit confusing with the way it jumped around from story to story.

based on research Hough did on the real Mabel Stark, one of the first female lion tamers in American history who is most known for using positive reinforcement to train instead of brute force back in the 20's. She had 5 husbands but those came second to her animals and Hough does a good job justifying those priorities to the reader. In the background is the misogyny she experienced even though generally she was thought to be the best tamer by her peers. I could have done without the graphic details of the maulings she and others in her life experienced (more on that would give major plot twists away), but I guess I should have expected that knowing the plot of the book before reading. Kudos to Robert at the store for recommending it to me many moons ago.

I thought I just needed something fun, and a little 'mindless...'. This certainly fit the bill, and had been recommended by a few friends. It was enjoyable for a while- in a sort of Desperate Housewives-" I can't believe I'm actually reading this novel" - sort of way.... And then I just couldn't take it anymore. I think I made it halfway through, maybe?? The 'mindlessness' became more crazy-making and braindamaging than anything. But to each her own, eh?

Sort of a Dominican version of Little Women. Even though it is a quick read it took me a long time to get into the story. Alvarez could have spent more time on character development. I kept getting the four sister confused. The story was fragmented and never really came together. I liked her way of telling the story backward so that the climax came with the family leaving the DR but nothing else really happened. It had promise but just didn't work for me.

Pity. I coulda used it. Shelved next to Oakley Hall's Warlock and Great Gunfighters of the Kansas Cow Towns. My thanks to the Coen bros.

I really enjoyed this book. The main character, a servant girl was really well-written. I enjoy how Hale wrote the book and the plot-line is great. I am glad to have spent the money to buy it.
