An interesting insight into slavery and its laws in the 1840s. The book follows the case of Salome' Miller or possibly an impostor? in her quest for freedom.

I really liked this book. I love the person who helps Anabelle (I don't want to spoil anything so I won't mention a name), though he/she is very weird. What I'm going to remember about this novel for a long time is its message. Well, several of them, actually. After I read it, I started noticing every lie I made, even if it was just a little one like saying I'm fine when I'm actually really tired or something. Also, I can relate to this book much more than to the other Sarah Dessen book I've read, The Truth About Forever, because who can really relate to having watched her dad die? I know what it feels like to hold something back that you can't say but very much want to, which I think a lot of people know about. This book is about love, friendship, courage, hard times, peer pressure, secrets and trust. It's definitely one of my favourites.

I didn't realize it was a short story. Or that it had 'Bonus Material' with it. I finished the story and read right through the bonus material - thinking it was part of the original and was VERY confused!
As a science student, I can informedly say this is some of the best scientific writing I have ever come across. As a bibliophile, I can make up my own words.

"An Epic Novel of Japan" the cover boasts--and perhaps it is, although it serves better as a set up to its sequel than anything else. Still, there are some great moments in here, and the interpretation of Japan that is built upon in this novel is good. The fanstasy elements, while too sparse to qualify the novel for any such genre label, enhance the characters of the story and don't dissuade the reader too much from the historical backrgound. It is only near the end, though, that the author's brilliance is first revealed--a power that is brought into full bearing in the sequel.

I love writers who take historical facts, weave them into fiction, and create a marvelous story. This book brings the Great Leap Forward, an experiment under the rule of Mao, that went so wrong that started in 1958. It's a fabulous read.

A thoughtful look at what lead up to a fight between immigrant teens on a school trip. The first half of the book was a bit slow, but well worth the read. The events were disturbing but do tell of war's effects on children and how they carry it with them.
