this book won a pulitzer, apparently. i couldn't get past the 2nd chapter, not due to the density of its writing on my shallow brain, but because it was BORING and i couldn't care less what happened to the characters.

This is one of the best books I ever read. About a few different women each sharing their life story on a train.

I really liked this book, which surprised me a bit. I'm not a big fan of Armstrong's column in Runner's World because it usually seems a little too preachy and touchy-feely. This book, which I would classify as "inspirational," which usually makes me roll my eyes and gag a little, was really quite good. Despite being a little cheesy in places, this book had a lot of great advice and practical application and (gulp) inspiration for runners of any level.
In May of 1945, 24 servicemen and WACs stationed in Indonesia take what was expected to be a sight-seeing trip over a nearby "undiscovered" jungle area of Dutch New Guinea (now known as Papua New Guinea). The plane crashes and only three survive. This story is about their survival among the "uncivilized" natives and their subsequent rescue. The difficulty of the rescue mission is explained in terms of the terrain and altitude of the island mountains where the crash took place. The story was somewhat interesting; however, I did not care for the writing style of the author, and what I perceived as his chauvanistic attitude regarding the lone female survivor!

A great read! I maybe enjoyed Kite Runner a little bit more, because the info about Afghanistan was totally fresh to me. But this one is outstanding too.

When this was recommended to me I had no idea it was Christian fiction, which I have no problem with, but it's kind of hard core. I couldn't make it past the first page.

I enjoyed this book very much. I loved his writing style. My brother-in-law, who knows a thing or two about literature, told me that the book was originally published as a serial novel, with a new section coming out every once in a while in a magazine format. I can imagine that, now that I know it, and can see how the writing lends itself to review and introspection. The American in me was glad that Pip lost his "portable property" and had to earn his way. The characters of Joe and Biddy were my personal favorites. I grew up with a wealth of uneducated, simple, hard-working, religious people who were solid gold and the most loyal friends ever. No matter how much time passes, those people are still hospitable and dear, with no reservations. Wemmick and the Aged Parent were another pair that endeared themselves to me. I loved that Wemmick's personal and private lives were so distinct and diverse. Do read it. It's long and verbose, and delightful.
