Very interesting read. The chapters alternate between the fair (architecture, etc) and the true-crime portion (serial killer Holmes - who is horrific especially for the times). Highly recommended. Plus it made me wish there was still a World's Fair!

Charming little story. I love the imagery. And I just love the assurdness of this little hen even though she seemingly is being a dope. Chickens are so cute.....

Apsley Cherry-Garrard was the youngest of the members of Robert Scott's south pole expedition in 1912. He was one of the three explorers who undertake the torrid journey for seven weeks in the biting Antarctic winter cold to collect some precious Emperor penguin eggs for the scientists. The book's title refers to this journey as 'the worst journey' and rightly so. The account of that journey is superbly brought to life by Cherry-Garrard with his brilliant capacity for writing. The rest of the book is a gripping account of the polar expedition which goes terribly wrong. Cherry-Garrard finally goes in search of the polar explorers when they don't return. He finds the dead bodies of Scott and his companions and their diaries which were all part of the history of polar exploration. The author writes in his introduction that "Polar Exploration is at once the cleanest and most isolated way of having a bad time which has been devised.". There is a poignant aside in the narration. The author eventually brings the emperor penguin eggs to the Natural history museum in London for safe-keeping and research. But the clerk at the museum treats him so badly with scant understanding of the monumental efforts which were behind the eggs that he has brought with him. All through the book, the author has only wonderful words for the courage and commitment of his fellow-expeditioners. The author was hardly 22 years old when he leaves for the Antarctic with little experience for such hardship in such punishing conditions. It is a sign of the times that he simply sails into this endeavour and does his job with splendid credit and never even brags one word about himself. This is so typical of many of the explorers of those times. At the end, he says: "Exploration is the physical expression of the Intellectual Passion. And I tell you, if you have the desire for knowledge and the power to give it physical expression, go out and explore.... If you march your Winter Journeys you will have your reward, so long as all you want is a penguin's egg." Cherry-Garrard has great facility in writing and the book is superbly narrated with great attention to detail. Most of whatever is found in the book has been confirmed by the diaries of the other members of the expedition and so it is very authentic. This book has been denoted the best adventure book ever by National Geographic Adventure magazine. A must read.

This was a fun book, and gave an introduction to sailing. Of course, it made Trixie and her friends out to be some kind of superheroes, as always, but that's what was fun about these books when I was a kid. Sept 2013 ... another fun re-read ... lessons about sailing, kids helping others, all combine to make this a fun book.

Honestly, not my favorite Lewis, but it is really great for the foundations of our faith. He does an especially great job at discussing the innate sense of good and evil--moral law--in every human being. In fact the only chapter I thought was less than mediocre was the one on marriage--it seemed a little senseless and arbitrary. Of course, he had not yet been married when he wrote it, so maybe his view changed after he fell in love.
I liked the undercurrent of terror that was always present in this book. I thought the author did a wonderful job of showing how people can have fun and strengthen relationships in really horrible times. This is Dystopia Light, and I appreciate how the author introduces this concept to teen readers. It's also got all the other parts of the teen experience: young love, trouble with parents, becoming more responsible. This was all good. I found the prospect of incest a little disturbing, though, and the narrator's voice often struck me as false. It was too typically sarcastic, very clearly an adult's version of a teenager's speech. This rankled, especially in the beginning when I was less involved in the story. I'd still recommend it, though.

Oh, my beloved Janet. I have never been more eager to return a book to the library. Not because I want to share the joy of reading with the next participant, but mainly because I can rid myself of the bedside-book guilt of not enjoying your literary attempt. Now, mind you, I understand you are a private person. And shy, to boot. But, I was under the impression that when I picked up a book about your life, that I would actually read about YOUR life. I pity the fool who believes this. I've learned more about your "friends" and their personal struggles than I have yours. Now, I can relate to your fluctuating weight and the determination to be healthy but happy; those struggles mirror my own. But, if I can be blunt, I realized that about you over the years. Your weight has been all over the board and I know, first hand, the emotional strain that comes with that reality. But all this book did was highlight it. Miss Jackson, (and I don't mean that in a nasty way), perhaps you weren't ready to tell your story. At least not most of it -- some for legal reasons, some because it's against your nature. I get that. But, I gotta say, this book, similar to your role in "For Colored Girls" was necessary, yet not notable. I am glad you are working through the issues that developed between you and Michael early in your siblinghood. And I am glad you are redefining your sense of self as a woman within relationships. I just hope in your next book, which I will undoubtedly read, (solely because I'm a fan! dammit!), perhaps you can redirect your focus. This book seems as if it's written for a younger audience. Other times, it seems as if you're talking to your older fans, in the same simplistic child-like tones. What you wrote was a whisper towards the truth. And even that takes bravery. If that is all we should expect from you, I will correct myself. But, I WILL warn others, that just because you subtitled the book, "A Journey to Finding and Loving Yourself" does not mean that Janet will take you anywhere beyond the corner CVS to pick up a copy of Essence. Janet, I still remain a fan....of your music!

It took me a while to get all of the characters straight, but the deeper into the book I got, the more clear they all became and I grew to love them all! Such a heart-warming story, while insightful with all of the WWII details of life on the Channel Islands during the German occupation. A must read!

The cover story is incredible, seamless, and complex. However, the rest of the stories in this volume don't match the same breadth and profundity of the first one.
