Enough good things can't be said about Gerald Durrell and his amazing (true) animal stories. Touching, clever, interesting, very witty and thoroughly compelling. I have seven of his books already, and my collection is steadily growing. Highly recommended.
I actually only made it halfway through. It has been so long since I picked it up that I'm officially moving on, though I might be interested to return to it later, when I have more time to read straight through. Interestingly, I've had this trouble with Chabon before. As much as I enjoyed KAVALIER AND CLAY, I don't think I quite finished that one, either. This isn't typical of me, but I do seem to have trouble staying focused on Chabon's stories. There's this lack of urgency or significance, as if he enjoys the individual moments so much that he gets lost in them. Not sure. At any rate, SUMMERLAND was hard for me because I'm just not a baseball fan. I am a fan of unusual or original fantasy, which is why I was excited to give this a chance. But the fantasy aspects didn't feel different or interesting enough, and the baseball references were lost on me. In the end I think I'd enjoy watching a film version more than reading the lengthy novel.
This book was fun, funny, and a good story. It's its own fairytale: knights, lion, jester, castles, and the like.
This book wasn't really a intereasting read but it improved my writing alot!!!
While Feed has engaging characters and a lot of dark humour, what's most striking is how the criticisms of the future have nothing to do with the future at all; rather they provide an often painful look at the current state of our consumer culture. An excellent book to prompt teens and adults alike to take pause and evaluate their place in it all. (Note: Don't let the slang and awkward phrasings dissuade you in the first few chapters - language is important to the story, and it will even out)

Schon wieder sehr interessant.

All her stories sound and seem the same. NOT THAT THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT. cause the same has been said of me. Though I guess her sameness is different in the sense that the themes she choses to examine and examine and you know, aren't really ones that interet me. I don't really know how much I care about the absurdity of human connection, suffering, longing. I don't know, I'm kind of into books that won't make me think too much so I won't fall off the elliptical.

The ending was a BIT much, but otherwise I found this novel bold, smart, and very funny.

I come away with a lot better impression than that which I had upon reading the first 30 or so pages. It is a mature writing, with insight, sophistication, and a sense of the grandly tragic. The author weaves a series of parallel stories--imageries--about some very different lives, each quixotic, each distinguished with a color of it own. All except one has only one thing in common--they are all cultural implants, all dancing in their separate destinies, spinning towards their fate that makes them destitutes. Even the one exception--Gyan, the tutor--who is not a cultural implant, also becomes alienated from himself through the greater forces of time against which he is powerless. The book is an exploration of what makes us seek or reject our cultural identities, the tragedy that identification brings, and, like a bolt of lightening near the end, gives us the hint of a most ancient seeking that is the primitive archetype of all identities--our physical inheritance. The novel weaves a series of vivid, parallel, worlds of intellect, emotion, culture, and geography, against the backdrop of the Colonial Raj, the 'Mother England', the new Indian republic and its growing pains, and of economic immigrants to the US. The writing is mesmerizing. The Himalayan ranges that blink through the cloud now and then majestically over the horizon remind us of the lofty ideals that are stepped on by the mortals. Abstract and intellectual in its aspirations, the novel is remarkably mature in its absence of proselytism. The younger Desai is one pukka novelist. Read the book.

Tan interesante.
