This story was beautiful. While I wasn't completely engaged with the first book of the series this second one was amazing. The characters are absolutely unique and you can't not fall in love with them, both Shane and Mikhail.

this book is a victorian style book on magic and friendship
my favorite line: "the cage is art"
This is one of the rare occasions where I picked up a book after seeing parts of the film adaptation. (I must admit, John Lithgow portraying a transvestite named Roberta is some good stuff!) John Irving always intrigues me because of his mystifying male leads, men who are at once so charming and yet, at times, so sophomoric. Garp's story also involves some pretty hip chicks, like his mother who defied the conventions of their small, Northeastern, and waspish community by willingly impregnating herself and raising her child on her own. His ensuing childhood, adolescence, and what I would hazard to call "adulthood" are fraught with a kind of Peter Pan complex that makes him an interesting writer and amazing father, but a less than stellar husband. Nevertheless, we forgive Garp his shortcomings and both smile and suffer by his side during a life equally tempered with joys and tragedy.

You know how the book is usually better than the movie? Well, in this case it's not. I adored the movie. As for the book, I'm only 40 pages into it, but so far I'm pretty disappointed. It's just flat. And that was the first Month (the book is divided into months,) and then... either the book got much better or I got less critical. I ended up liking it. It's WAY different than the movie. The movie jumbles the characters up a bit, makes them all younger and prettier, amps up all the romantic subplots, and glides over much of the backstory, and yet manages to pull it off. And yet, the book remains pretty good. I especially liked the month of April.

I loved being able to see the continuation of Kael and Angel’s relationship in this sequel. It felt like they both matured in different ways, but it was Kael that took the spotlight for coming out of his shell. Now, some might laugh at that description. Really? The big bad assassin coming out of his shell? Well, yeah, in terms of owning up to the fact that he wasn’t perfect at everything and showing so much more emotion with respect to Angel. I literally LMAO at Kael’s lack of “people skills” and almost comical fear of women as portrayed in this book, but I also felt a tug on the heartstrings when Kael risked his life on unofficial business, thawed a little bit toward Conran, and melted when in the presence of “his boy”. I still have a smile on my face – fantastic!!!
Not to buy any more Mark Haddon books because they were written by Mark Haddon. Just kidding, it was a cute book.. albeit a bit juvenile.
EH. Just ok.

A very good mystery! Fast paced with a main character that I liked!

** spoiler alert ** Good book! Reminded me a lot of the Virgin Suicides. I kind of like the way you never really find out for sure what happens to Nora, but that there are possibilities introduced that are confirmed at the same time they are denied.
