Just read my review on Winnetou 1, just the same... ehm even more tired perhaps :D. In fact, I had 3 books of Winnetou series and I couldn't read the third book anymore... no energy left :D.

Personal preference on rating. Just not a fan of Koontz's. I really wanted to like Odd's universe, but I found it all it a bit dull.

There was a review from the Boston Globe on the cover of my copy that said, "Reading this is an experience to be treasured." I agree that reading it was definitely an experience, but I'm not so sure that I will treasure it. Stegner's writing is of course beautiful, his storytelling masterful, but this book evoked a lot of unexpected and unpleasant feelings and I just hadn't been prepared to squirm. Also, I think he expects us as the reader to sympathize with one particular character over the other in the end, and I truly did not. I really disagreed with the conclusions that were drawn and that left me feeling unsatisfied. Overall I'm glad I read it for the experience and for the reflecting it has led me to do. And I have to admit I find it fascinating that a book can be simultaneously engrossing and dull. That takes some work. Also admirable is the way that Stegner is able to give voice to such diverse characters. I especially enjoyed his Victorian women. They were fun!* *at times

Again, like `The Drawing of the three`, this book does not disappoint. In this volume we get to see more of Rolands world, as well as learning more about his past. Also the backgrounds of the other characters are touched upon, & also how their destinies are interlinked. We start to learn about how Rolands world turned out the way it has. From start to finish I thoroughly enjoyed this read, a real page turned & I anxiously await to see what happens to Roland & the others in the next volume of the story.
Some of the writing in this book was just gorgeous. I want to quote and share particular passages with everyone I know. But, if I am going to be completely honest, the story was just a little out there for me and I struggled to push through the middle and finish.

Interesting to see the development of a person like Paul Farmer.

I hate the idea that they're turning this into a movie. It's like "The Notebook". My characters, my scenes, my interpretation; they're gonna kill it. Great read - and nix the film.

I received this book through Good Reads's First Reads. An unflinching look at the oil trade in Nigeria, and the ramifications thereof. Oil on Water spares no one. Two Nigerian reporters are on the trail of kidnapped woman, the wife a British oil executive. What was supposed to be a routine ransom spins wildly out of control. This is undoubtedly a cynical book. (Though given the subject matter one could simple call it realistic.) However, it's not unbearably pessimistic. There are good people, though bad things tend to happen to them. This is not a book that is intent on providing simple answers. I had some minor problems with the writing. The time line jumps around, and it was sometimes jarring. I'm not sure if other people would have trouble keeping track like I did. Oil on Water offers a searing is slightly brief view into a world I know very little of.
