** spoiler alert ** I can't say I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoyed the previous one, but there is no one reason for that. This book is great in that Patricia Briggs gives us more of a history of Mercy's backstory and uses Native American myths to build her plot this time. Both add interesting layers to the novel, and it make me want to read up on my Native American mythology. On the other hand, in order to do this, Briggs has to take Mercy into that world - which means taking her out of the Tri-Cities. Doing this loses all our favorite supporting characters, familiar places, and their subplots - though Briggs makes an effort not to lock them out completely by giving us some Stefan time. This essentially leaves us with Mercy and Adam and a bunch of new supporting characters - whom we can't learn much about due to the sheer nature of who they are, as well as the fact that there are multiple new people introduced. I'm not saying I don't love Mercy and Adam, because I do, but they and their pack bonds are pretty well-fleshed out by now. I love how they guard each other and protect each other and love each other (I'm not going to lie, I cried multiple times at the sappy stuff in this book), but I miss them playing off the other characters as well. I'm looking forward to seeing that again in the next book. This one? Still fun stuff.

This novel was built upon the fact that during the Middle Ages, executioners and their families were shunned, forced to live outside the village walls and forbidden to attend church and social gatherings. Thirteen-year-old Lily, the fictional main character, is cursed from the moment she was born - her father is the village executioner. But because her mother is the one to assist her father in his duties, Lily keeps to herself in the forrest near their cottage, gathering herbs and healing wounded animals, and taking comfort in her mother when her father distances himself from them. Lily loses that one comfort when her mother sickens and dies. Now Lily is doomed to be her father's assistant at executions. A gentle, quiet girl, Lily cannot bear to see an animal in pain - she doesn't know how she can ever watch executions. But Lily won't resign herself to the fate assigned to her. This was an excellent historical novel that brought the time and place of England in the 1400s, gruesome details and all, to life. It was inspiring to read a story about a young girl who chose to fight her place in life in a time when most people were forced to accept whatever their circumstances in life turned out to be, whether they liked them or not.

This series continues to blow the "single book per couple" model of paranormal romance out of the water. There is a lot of good stuff to mine in Elena and Raphael's characters, and by spooling it out over multiple books, Nalini Singh has a chance to really sink her teeth into them. The idea that someone's broken childhood makes them vulnerable is hard to show in 300 pages; in 900, the nuances can really be teased out. The prose gets a little purple at times (but not so much in the sex scenes (does it count as purple prose if it isn't in the sex scenes?)), but overall I liked it as much as I like all of Singh's books.
