I am embarrassed that I only just now read this book. Very embarassed. But now it's under my belt, and it was great. Especially after finishing the book, when I went back and reread the first chapter where he's setting up what he's going to say in the book and why...it gave the whole story more power.

** spoiler alert ** I found Hidden Wives interesting, for the most part, but I did have a few gripes that really had nothing to do with the story as a whole. For example, I understand Rachel was very beautiful. I can buy the fact that seventeen people in the community received testimonies to marry her. I have a harder time buying the fact that she was so beautiful her own father decided to rape her. Equally hard to buy is that the pawn shop guy would make some random proposal to her, and the drug store worker would comment that she shouldn't hide under a baseball cap in the same day. I'm pretty sure most people don't get daily comments about their looks, beautiful or not. Not only that, but a pimp probably isn't going to approach someone on the Strip in front of a fountain I assume was at the Bellagio. And he won't be followed by a cheap prostitute handing out flyers. The Bellagio is on the nice part of the Strip and that fountain is going to be packed with tourists, not low-end sex workers. Which brings me to my last gripe. Prostitution is not legal in Nevada as a whole. It's actually illegal in Las Vegas. So there! Okay. As I said before, the story was very interesting, particularly the parts detailing the secret parts of the Blood of the Lamb group. Because it was so i interesting, I may look into getting a nonfiction book on the subject of fundamental Mormonism. However, the characters lacked depth and personality. Nearly every one was like a cardboard cutout on the side of good or evil. And most of the time the dialogue seemed unnatural. Still, the story was interesting enough that these things did little to hinder the readability.

Ugh. Just ugh. Most of the time that I read this book I actually kind of enjoyed it but it just dragged on and on. It had great potential: the story was interesting, the characters held my interest but the writing is what I think failed here. I really wish I could have found out what happened, but at the same time the journey does not seem worth taking so I will leave it unfinished at page 139.

Really enjoyed this book - couldn't put it down. Interesting characters, the mystery wasn't obvious, and liked the recipes for some of the products provided at the end. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Next to the Bible, no book has shaped my Christian faith and religious practices as much as this. Richard Foster does an excellent job citing scripture as well as providing well-documented examples from Christian history.

An excellent book! Fast-paced, witty, and well-wrought prose with just the right amount of melodrama and adventure. I loved the beginning of the story when, here, the protagonist responds to his sister-in-law who is pestering him. "My dear Rose," I answered, laying down my egg-spoon, "why in the world should I do anything?" And so the adventure begins. It makes be despair (slightly) that an adventure novel then (1894) exhibits such great prose. Prose that can't be touched by today's standards. Prose with posture, presence, complicated syntax, and the comfort and pace of a man sitting in his armchair, as the evening grows dim, writing the next installment to his adventure. The only novel I can think of that I have read in the last ten years like this would be Peace Like a River. Of course, the difference in the standards of today's prose are simply a difference, not a lack of standards. Anyhow, whenever I read something from before 1910, I feel like I'm a different kind of head (perhaps one without the prevalence of cinema?), and the prose like a force to its own self spreads out easily before me with no distraction.
