What I Liked: 1) Fever picked up right where Wither left off, so there was no guessing as to what may or may not have been happening in the interim. I always like that when an author picks up characters lives immediately. 2) Rhine's continued search for her brother. I'd almost forgotten about this aspect of the story, since it had been so long since I'd read Wither. But we are quickly reminded of it early on in Fever. 3) There are a lot of new places to explore in this book, as Rhine and Gabriel are on the run. They get into some scary places, that made this book darker than the first (I wasn't sure that was possible). 4) I liked how Rhine finally came to terms with the changes that had happened in the world during the year that she was at the Manor. As it says in the summary, the world really does mirror the feelings that Rhine is experiencing as she and Gabriel try to stay one step ahead of Vaughn. What I Didn't Like: I didn't connect with this book the way I did in the first one. I think it was all a matter of timing. Wither moved with a consistent pace, and new things were happening around every turn. In Fever, I felt like there was a lot of stop and start. Overall thoughts: Fever was a nice continuation of Wither. There were a few pacing issues that I thought made the storyline a bit hard to follow, but overall, Fever was well-written and took the story arc in a new and surprising direction. I'll be looking forward for the next part of Rhine and Gabriel story, particularly with the surprising end of Fever.

I started this book with a bit of pessimism based on my feelings from the first book. I was pleasantly surprised, however. Sanderson is an incredible writer and that is shown in this book. The story is fantasy, but it doesn't need to be. It is so specific, yet so vague, that a reader can relate to any or all of the characters and their challenges. It shows that overcoming great obstacles does not lead to "happily ever after" and that our choices, even our well-intentioned ones, will lead to more issues. The ending is amazing in this book! Sanderson does an excellent job planning the story thoroughly to lead you through just exactly the way he wants to. You will be surprised by the ending, I guarantee it. Its unpredictable, and understandable at the same time and...I probably shouldn't say anymore. Just keep in mind that Sanderson is not afraid of tragedy, and that is more exlicatory for the whole story, not necessarily the ending. Great book, with great struggles, and great personal lessons to be learned...he doesn't teach any messages in the book, but anyone can be reinforced in their ideas, whatever those ideas may be.

only twice can i think of times that i liked the movie better than the book. oddly enough, both stories came from this book. rita hayworth and the shawshank redemption and the body (stand by me). both fabulous movies, 'eh' short stories.

After getting over the giggles and settled down to read this seriously, I found this book educational, interesting and jaw-dropping. If I'd recorded the soundtrack of me reading this it would be full of giggles, gasps, oh my gods and ewws. Anyone listening would assume I was Bonking, instead of reading about it. Mary Roach fully immerses herself in her research, even taking part in some studies to experience the experiments for herself. I feel for her husband. Being married to her can mean finding yourself chatting to a strange man watching you having sex with your mad wife inside an MRI machine. Her witty commentary on the history of sex research shows the people behind the white coats weren't all perverts and had a genuine scientific curiosity about sex, the most taboo subject in the world no matter time or place you live in. The negative effect this had on both their careers and their personal lives was sometimes staggering. However, some of the experiments on animals...err...well, they were uncomfortable to read. Roach only reported on the humane ones but even those -I was questioning where the line between science and bestiality is, if there is one. I'm sorry, researchers but there was a gigantic EWW! moment involving a female primate. It was too weird. Being female I was most interested in the female chapters than the male which tended to drag for me although penis re-attachment surgery was most...enlightening. *coughs to hide smile* Certain statistics, anecdotes and trivia (e.g. items removed from naughty places that can't be explained without embarrassment) were spread throughout the book, many of which were in the footnotes so whatever you do, pay attention to those even if you, like some, don't particularly like Roach's writing. Her sense of humour won't be to everyone's taste, for me it's more hit than miss but I can understand why some see it as forced, trying too hard to evoke a laugh from her audience. In an ideal world I'd want to give this to teenagers as part of their sex education. Anyone who might assume this is just some smutty perverted book just by looking at the cover, is wrong. Neither is it dry and boring, there will be no Zzzz's whilst reading this. If anything I'd warn people: You must have a strong stomach. There are graphic descriptions of surgical procedures that will have you involuntarily crossing your legs in sympathy. So if you want to read about how men get erections, why some women orgasm and others don't then this book is for you. Have fun and try not to puke.

Stay tuned for a blog tour as well as an author Q and A
I started this book on 03/22/2009. I finished this book on 04/08/2009. This book was just okay for me. It got really interesting when the trail of Tom Robinson was going on and toward the end it got interesting again. But other then that it was about following around a little girl and her brother. It is a very racial book so I understand how it was a big deal back when it came out. Overall it wasn't really bad but it wasn't my favorite. I'd probably give it a 2 and a half star if I could.

The pace is slower in this book, and John Perry (the main character) is too idolized to be very interesting. But I liked the plot.
My reasons for wanting to read this book are two-fold. We are currently in the process of adopting a daughter from China and Xinran's story is an intriguing window into our daughter's culture. Xinran also runs a non-profit dedicated to educating girls who have been adopted abroad about their Chinese heritage. If you're interested in learning more about Xinran check out [http://www.motherbridge.org]. My second reason is that I just like reading about women's lives and other cultures throughout the world. I'm about half-way through and so far Xinran's 'The Good Women of China' casts a facinating light on the lives of women in our world's largest population. Sometimes touching, sometimes chilling it is very well written, and I'll update this review when I finish. Cheers, Eileen Seminole, FL [http://www.zenofadoption.com]
