I am not really sure how to rate this book. I decided to give 3 stars as I cant say I extremely liked but didnt hate it either. I liked the basic idea of the story, the social criticism and so on. but some parts are extremely dragging and are in my opinion no help for the set up of the story.

I would actually give it 3 1/2 stars, but there are no halves (unfortunately)> I really like Picoult's writing, and I read this book quite quickly, just needing to figure out how it ended. It was very entertaining. Unfortunately, it reminded me far too much of her previous book My Sister's Keeper, which is one of my favorite of Picoult's. Seemed to be practically the same story line - different disease. Unnecessary side stories, similar shock ending, telling the story in different voices, etc. I was extremely disappointed by the ending and didn't buy it for one minute. (In so many ways...) It seemed like she (the author) just got tired of writing and hurried up with a shock ending, and wrapped it all up neatly... well, kind of. Anyway, moving on to different one of hers, hoping to like it a little more.

This is the first in the adventures of Lilly Hawkins. I had a bit of a hard time at first but it did not take long for me to get into the story line. It turned into a very fun read. I look forward to reading more adventures of Lilly.

I realize this seems weird -- for school, but interesting nonetheless!
The poems that Revell sited, and many of his insights about poetry are amazing. They challenge what I think about my favorite poems, and also helped me to think newly about poems I would, in the past, have dismissed as "unsurprising." I am utterly grateful for that. On the other hand, the book often felt overly analytic to me, like I was reading a text for a college course. I think this book is best read in small doses.
Sitting on my night table, getting shifted in and out of rotation, I can't quite engage with this collection as I did with Paris to the Moon. Though I enjoy Gopnik as a modern essayist and journalist, I find his prose at its most fluid and his observations their most keen and profound when his children are at the nexus of the social moment he's capturing- "Bumping into Mr. Ravioli" stands out as a favorite so far.

This is a very well written, albeit sad debut novel. Moscow, 1939. A former teacher, who is now an archivist in the Lubyanka prison, meets Isaac Babel (imprisoned) and is also in charge of his manuscripts, which it seems will inevitably be destroyed. The overriding theme of this novel seems to be that of loss, the loss of loved ones, culture, dignity, and memory.
engrossing
interesting

OMG. I LOVED this book. It was so good~ I'm a big fan of the fallen angel books so this was a great read. Second time around, I remembered how ANNOYING her friend Vee can be. It's like seriously? If she were my friend I'd tell her to shut the fuck up half the time.
