This is an exciting read, turning on its head just about everything we thought we knew about history.
Sia Fiegal came to my school years ago and did a talk and man, did it go down well - she was the best speaker and had the audience in hysterics the whole time. As a result, this book was constantly checked out from the school library, which was pretty rare since hardly anyone read volunteerily. It's about a ten year old girl in Samoa (semi autobiographical) and is totally amazing and I recommend it to all my overseas pals, because I don't know many people outside of New Zealand who know this fine author.

Iris Lockhart receives a phone call from a psychiatric hospital informing her that she's been given power of attorney over her great-aunt, Esme, who has been a "resident" of the hospital for 61 years. But Iris has never heard of Esme Lennox, who is supposedly her grandmother, Kitty's sister. Her grandmother now has Alzheimer's and her father is dead. The hospital is closing and Iris doesn't know what to do with this woman who may be out of her mind. In The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox, Maggie O'Farrell creates a haunting story of a girl who was locked away in an institution at the age of 16. Esme's life before her institutionalization is revealed slowly through Esme's thoughts and those of her sister, Kitty. Iris's own story is intermingled with that of her great aunt. I love how O'Farrell shows the similarities between Esme and Iris in the way they rebel from societal rules. Esme does so through her disregard for the proper dress and formalities of her time. Iris does so through her clandestine relationships with her stepbrother and a married lawyer. I read somewhere a comparison of the style of this novel and that of Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. I have to say I agree in terms of the feeling the stories evoke and the way each author takes the mystery straight through to the last page. But readers of my blog may remember I didn't like Rebecca at all; yet, I loved The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox. I think this is because I felt so strongly for the characters in this novel. And O'Farrell, while she presents many of Esme's and Kitty's thoughts in a stream-of-consciousness way, kept the story moving forward. I didn't feel that the descriptions were dragging the story at all. I highly recommend The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox to anyone who enjoys mystery and literature. I read it in just two days ~ I had a hard time putting it down as I was anxious to see how Esme ended up in the institution, and what was going to become of her in the end. I look forward to discussing this one with my book club group as I think there will be plenty of topics to cover. With that in mind, here is a set of Reading Group Questions for this novel.
I enjoyed Chevalier's attempt to give a personal face to author/painter Blake. The best part for me was his thoughts on opposites, "what lies between two opposites is us. The tension between two contraries is what makes us ourselves." Interesting thoughts on those in power wanting to stop anyone who questions them--"power unchecked leads to tyranny." How true is that?! The ending did leave me with a few unanswered questions, but then endings that are open-ended leave much for one's imagination.
I loved this book!! It's different from the typical historical romances (that I love!) It has great Scottish history and a wonderful storyline that keeps you hooked!
read in 2009. fun to read, because my grandpa was also in the CCC and met my grandma at a dance.

Made the mistake of seeing the film first before reading Garland's book... You can see how Hollywood twisted parts of the novel. However, Garland has created a believable and engaging read with some interesting social commentary on our times and the people who live in them.

When I read the synopsis of this book, I was expecting to read the typical mystery/thriller. Girl meets boys, boy is a murderer, girl and friends have to solve the murder. Boy was I wrong. This book is nothing ordinary. It is the very complex story of a very complex cast of characters. Sometimes I loved them, sometimes I hated them, sometimes I was just disappointed in them. But always I was intrigued by them. I could tell right away that this book was going to be a dark one. At the halfway point, I really had no idea how I was going to feel about the story in the end. At one point, I even contemplated whether I should finish it, but I couldn't turn away. It was like watching a train that is on the wrong track. You know it is going to wreck, you don't want to see it, but you can't turn away. The only thing that I will say, though, is that I couldn't read this book straight through. I had to read some each day, but read other things along with it. This is the first book by Billie Hinton that I have read, but I will certainly be reading more. She really knows how to tell a story that keeps you involved. I loved her edgy descriptions, use of symbolism, and the complexity of the characters. I find that I HAVE to know what happens to these characters and hope to read the sequel to this one soon. Kudos, Ms. Hinton. A very complex, very dark story!
Eclipse made me angry quite a few times, but it also made me happy sometimes. So I don;t know what to say about it, really. It didn't make me wonder about anything, but I did want to read the next book.
