I bought my copy from a secondhand shop in London by chance. Not the best de Botton novel, but his witty interjections of literature, art, and philosophy between descriptions of life in London is always welcome. (de Botton)

It's like the Catcher in the Rye of our generation. But whereas in Catcher I disliked the characters but liked the writing style, in Special Topics I liked neither. The people are caricatures and the Author Substitutes Too Many Capital Letters to substitute for the impact of a good vocabulary or turn of phrase. The ending was good, but only because Blue is rescued from a pretentious, mildly despicable character into a mostly normal young adult. Fun to read, but is overly confident that it's an Important Novel.

Neruda provides different aspects for love. He mixes verses of pure love with contempt, thus making his poetry less romanticized and more human (in the most beautiful way). These poems have added to my perspective on the view that something can be so ugly it becomes beautiful, or a song that is so hated can become a part of you.

This book was entirely inspirational for me at a point where I had moved to a new city, couldn't find a job and had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Not that it gave me an answer, but it inspired me to get out there and learn about the many different paths people can take to get where they are. A must-read for any recent college grad, or anyone who's in a career slump.

Enjoyed listening to this book. Ruth read it and liked it, so I listened to it while I worked around the house.

Two neat little stories - the first Bond short stories I have read, and rather good too. Unusual missions in both stories ("The Living Daylights" and "From a View to a Kill") with a focus on waiting, watching, and drinking until the enemy shows his hand. Fleming's Bond is particularly snobbish and dismissive here, as he muses on life, nature, the awfulness of Berlin, the awfulness of Paris, how disappointing French women are, the time that he lost his virginity and his note-case simultaneously... and then the brief and brutal moments of action (along with, spoiler alert, an act of restraint bordering on mercy). An enjoyable quick read.

I read this book with Cameron. It is a very tender and sad little story. Cameron thinks I am crazy because I cried through the whole thing.

Not as good as the others I have read featuring Reacher.

An interesting portrayal of college-aged students in the period between the two world wars, trying to find their way in an England that has a lot of apathy and little connection. There is some commentary on sexuality that seems before its time as well. I've heard Waugh's other books have some humor, and I'd try one. “When people hate with all that energy, it is something in themselves they are hating.” “As my intimacy with his family grew I became part of the world which he sought to escape; I became part of the bonds which held him.” “There’s nothing wrong in being a physical wreck, you know. There’s no moral obligation to be Postmaster-General or Master of Foxhounds or to live to walk ten miles at eighty.” “The trouble with modern education is you never know how ignorant people are... These young people have such an intelligent, knowledgeable surface, and then the crust suddenly breaks and you look down into depths of confusion you didn’t know existed.”

I loved reading this book. I polished it off in one day. Well, it was 12:06am when I finished. Technically the next day, I guess. :) Shannon Guymon does a great job of telling a story and make you feel for the characters. I was reminded in this book how painful it is to judge someone without really knowing their hearts. We may think we know about a situation or someone, but in reality, few of us really understand the hearts of most people before we make judgement calls. I'm grateful for the reminder today that kindness is the best path and forgiveness is a gift. The romance thrown in was the icing on the cake. :)
