This is not the book you want to read the last ten pages of before you start reading it in earnest.

My favorite book from the Twilight series. I think it's Meyer's most well-rounded and complete work in the series. It was better balanced and actually had tension going for it. It seemed like her characters and story line were finally reaching their full potential. Too bad she dropped the ball so badly in Breaking Dawn!

The smells and tastes of Japan came back to me.
The multiple stories of The Bluest Eye is told from the perspective of different characters within the novel. The main narrator is a child named Claudia who relates the pitiful story of Pecola Breedlove, but the reader also sees the story through the eyes of the characters Pecola Breedlove, Pauline Breedlove, Cholly Breedlove, and the child molester Soaphead Church. After witnessing a fight between her mother and father Pecola’s child-like understanding of the world makes her believe that if she had blue eyes she would have friends and family who love and care for her. She eventually goes insane. I had read this novel about ten years ago, and I didn't like it because I thought the story was just so sad. Now I read it and wonder at Morrison's ability to write of grief and desolation with such depth and at the same time, use words to create such beautiful imagery along side the horror.

Tony Le Tissier has done a great job using "then and now" photographs, giving us a look at the city of Berlin throughout its many phases. From the turbulent years of the Weimar Republic to the Third Reich and up to the end of the cold war leading to the unification of the two Germanys. The book is filled with many fantastic pictures taken from archives matched with their equivalents taken nowadays all with rich text explaining the historical points of each and the history of the city in general. Especially the part of the Battle of Berlin is so detailed that you can actually imagine those last days of heavy fighting in the city. By reading this book and examining the photographs you actually get a little feel of how things where then and how they fit in Berlins present landscape.
Actually, I'm still working my way through this. It isn't an easy read (still more readable than Kurt V) but it brings up so many powerful points I will often finish a chapter and chew on it for a month or so, then return.
