I enjoyed this but not quite as much as I wanted to - it got a bit chicklitty at points. This is weird because I quite like chicklit - but I thought I was getting something a bit deeper this time.

Maggie Stiefvater has this incredibly unique style of writing in the endless pile of YA novels so much that it stands out in its own, magical way. Stiefvater writes in this soft, muted tone where the world around the character is described more than the character itself, and everything else is left for you to piece together. Some people find that boring, but after the first couple of pages of getting used to it, I found myself just blending into this swirl of imagery and raw experience of the descriptions. There's this dream-like quality to Stiefvater's writing that makes readers want to be there to see more than what's being said. That being said, while I think that the writing style is unique and magical, it isn't exactly my favorite style, either. At times it became bogged or uninteresting, and that is why I only rated the book "liked it." Despite the rating I give it, I would still recommend this book to anyone out there interested in a semi-dark, somber book. Well, it's a mildly somber book - it's definitely not a lighthearted read. I did like it, really.

It's an interesting thing, rereading these books nearly 11 years after the first read through... and as much as I enjoyed the first two, Prisoner of Azkaban is probably the best of the entire series. This book introduces some of the best characters (Professor Lupin, whom I love almost as much as Fred Weasley, and the wonderful Sirius Black), characters that will become larger players in the future (Cho Chang, Cedric Diggory, Peter Pettigrew, etc) begins to hint at James Potter's time at Hogwarts as well as an over-arcing story for the remainder of the series (The Dark Lord shall rise again stronger than ever!) all while developing the other characters and playing around with a few fun little fantasy staples. Absolutely exquisite! The only issue I have with the books so far is Rowling's need to act as if the reader has not read the first few books; in each one she reveals that Harry is a wizard, that Hogwarts is a wizarding school, etc. etc. I'm sure it's helpful to get people into the series with later books, but at the same time, she continously hints at other things from the earlier books without explaining them... so it is necessary to read the first ones... and if so, why then treat your reader as if they've forgotten everything they learned from the first books? As if, had she not told us again, we would forget Harry was a wizard and wonder why he doesn't find it strange to be surrounded by so much magical stuff. Aside from that, I love the book... and I found it still enjoyable enough to award it 5 stars.

Late to join the Stephanie Plum party but very glad I did. Stephanie gets herself into all sorts of trouble and the fun is finding her way out. She's no Barbie and definitely doesn't start out badass. She's a pretty real character and I'm excited for the next in the series.

Death Match by Lincoln Child is a very fast read, or at least it was for me. The story of trying to find a perfect romantic match is intriguing to me, and when Child starts telling us about a new match-making program called Eden Incorporated and how successful they are, the feeling of unease begins to settle in. The company is incredibly secritive and Christopher Lash, our protagonist, finds this out when he begins to investigate the double-suicide of Eden’s first 100% matched couple. The Thorpe’s were perfect for each other, so why are they dead? Lash is asked to figure this out to save Eden’s reputation as the best match-making service in the world. More perfect couples die mysteriously and the horror of it all deepens when Lash himself enters the program to really see how it works. This book was absolutely excellent and I would expect nothing less from the co-author of the Pendergast series. The book had a surprise ending that I did not see coming as well which is always nice when reading novels. It had the feel of a Crichton novel with all of the high-tech stuff involved in the match-making program, but it didn’t have Crichton’s usual anti-climactic ending. Death Match is a good book for fans of fiction in general but I would call it a techno-thriller. Horror is here though in the old fashioned, building tention to unbearable levels sort of way. It is just a good book all around and one that I will definitely read again in the future.

read this for book club . . . it was pretty good, but i hoped it would turn out differently. the end was probably the most realistic ending that could be under the circumstances. the characters' shame and tragic inablity to communicate honestly illustrates the importance of openness, forgiveness, and humility in family life.
