I chose to read this book before Oprah added is to her list...just so you know! This is an intriguing look at the life of Cal/Callie a hermaphrodite growing up in Detroit in the 60's. The story starts with her grandparents who were Greek immigrants in the 20's. At the end I wasn't sure if I liked it or not and I do have to say that I talked about it a lot which makes me think I liked it. I'm just not sure I liked the ending. The story was very fascinating and I recommend it.

This book has a special place for me because its sale contributed to the Matthew Shepard Foundation. My high school drama class did The Laramie Project my senior year and it's always meant a lot to me to be an ally. That said, I liked this book. I didn't love it, but I liked it. It didn't take me too long to figure out who Patrick's attacker was, especially after discussion of Patrick's secret boyfriend. I understand the motives behind the beating, but it still felt like the character's personality took a 180 turn at the end, and the resolution didn't really feel like resolution to me. I guess part of it is just the fact that it took place in such a small town, and I can't even comprehend that level of "everyone's business is everyone's business." I really like Lauren Myracle, and I loved that this felt ten times more mature than her other stuff. But it just left me a little unemotional, when this kind of story should have drawn me in and probably made me cry. Since we start out the story with Patrick unconscious in a hospital, we don't really get a chance to meet him and connect with him. We have a few flashbacks from Cat, but they're nothing more than snippets. Overall, I enjoyed it, but it's not my favorite book of the year.

terrifying page-turner
A great history that is somewhat flawed by an overly emotional approach to the Bolshevik betrayal of the revolution

I'm loving all the sounds of the alphabet.
my mom read this to me when I was little. I can't even begin to describe how much I love it. it's at turns whimsical and heartwarming. I can't wait to read it to my son.

This was a sweet, but sad little book. It was a verse novel, so you can read it in like 2 hours. Its a story of a girl who suffers the death of her boyfriend. He haunts her because of the guilt she carries.
I liked this book but you have to have the stomach for the subject matter. It's very psychological but great. It's a very quick read also.
