This is a really interesting history of the early roots of rap & hip hop, graffiti (art) and breakdancing, written by a New York Times reporter. It touches upon block parties in the Bronx and Brooklyn, street gangs, subway taggers, and street performers. I wish I knew what I did with my copy of the book. I may have to order it again. I had it for a few years at least around 1985/1986 and in the 90s I realized it was gone gone gone. Does anyone know where my book is?

I enjoyed this book very much. I loved his writing style. My brother-in-law, who knows a thing or two about literature, told me that the book was originally published as a serial novel, with a new section coming out every once in a while in a magazine format. I can imagine that, now that I know it, and can see how the writing lends itself to review and introspection. The American in me was glad that Pip lost his "portable property" and had to earn his way. The characters of Joe and Biddy were my personal favorites. I grew up with a wealth of uneducated, simple, hard-working, religious people who were solid gold and the most loyal friends ever. No matter how much time passes, those people are still hospitable and dear, with no reservations. Wemmick and the Aged Parent were another pair that endeared themselves to me. I loved that Wemmick's personal and private lives were so distinct and diverse. Do read it. It's long and verbose, and delightful.

A fascinating and moving portrait of a family from another culture.

I liked it. A nice story, not super deep, but quite entertaining. I like the touch of magical realism.
Samantha happens to be my sisters name too. I have read the whole series but enjoyed this book.

Had started David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas before leaving for Maui, but since leaving it on my night stand had to find a new book when I got there, and what a wonderful intervention by the powers that be. Anansi Boys was a better book for me to start my vacation with. Relaxing, funny, gently, and quick. Neil Gaiman books generally bring a smile to my face.
reread!! Loved as always! 2016 REREAD
The way this book was written was very interesting. The prose was very beautiful and it was very stream of consciousness. That is about it, the story did not pick up and there was not much action. This book is about a young man who devotes his life to religion and school only to then throw it all away to become an artist. I liked the book because of the way it was written, but it is what it is.

Couldn't do it. I just couldn't. I made it about 4 chapters in or so, and then nothing. Maybe I'll try again later in life.

This book was okay. It was a little too slow-paced for me, and I don't think Vaughn did a good job of making Artegal and Kay's relationship believable, but I think the ending was perfect, and that's good enough for me :)
