This book got great reviews and I first heard about it, I think, on public radio. I have mixed feelings and am not exactly sure what I think, though. The near-future America it portrays is almost plausible ("apparat" that people wear like necklaces around their necklaces constantly stream data -- credit score and "fuckability," for example -- about other people in a way similar to smart phones; the U. S. is basically bankrupt and economic power has shifted to Asia; homeless people create tent cities within cities; people anesthetize themselves by shopping and having cheap, promiscuous sex; the government monitors the comings and goings and doings of citizens with Big Brother-like ease; seemingly caring people are strangely numb to violence and suffering; even old friendships must be betrayed or abandoned), so for me this book is more disturbing and uncomfortable than funny and entertaining (as the reviews suggest). I find the character Eunice credible and sympathetic even while I dislike the way she treats Lenny. Her tortured, complex love for her family, including her abusive father, rings true. I like Lenny, too, for his stubborn attachment to books (real books) and his attempts to secure and hold on to Eunice's love in the midst of the hellish circumstances they find themselves in.

I really enjoyed this one. Its comedy worked better than the sad parts and the demonstrations of the language barrier were very funny. Worth a read.

The best Victorian gay porn I've ever read. Well, the only Victorian gay porn I've ever read. But who can say no to that? You can read it in an evening and it's a fantastic guilty pleasure that you can tell yourself is an academic study of historical eroticism=)

Fun, clever, and smart. Pretty much what you would expect from the Fug Girls for a YA audience. It was entertaining and funny as hell.

Fascinating, informative and scary. Was a little boring at times with the references to the 12 textbooks, but it definitely left me wanting to know what other lies I learned in school.

Like Brave New World, I had to read this in both high school and college. I adore this book. I definitely want to read more by George Orwell, because I like the other stuff I've read by him (mainly minor essays, no other books yet). This book is even better when read in conjunction with Brave New World.
I'm amazed at how this series just keeps getting better as I read. It was hard not to just read read read, nigh impossible to put down. Five stars!

Great addition to the series. Liked knowing who the bad guy(s) were from the start and Eve's reaction to it. A true display of the the relationships in Eve's life. Really enjoyable read.
