Basically I don't like this book because I think Sebold's idea of death is naive and very, very human.

A rather narrow reading of Scripture . . .
This was a pretty disturbing book at times. It's amazing that he turned out a reasonably sane person. You'll absolutely despise Dede Wilsey by the end. I hope that the publication of this book brought great humiliation to her life.

Took me awhile to get into this book but thought it was a good read. Looking forward to reading the next one!

This book singlehandedly restored my faith in the historical Jesus and is absolutely the most spiritually affirming novel I have ever read. What better figure to explore the theme of sacrifice with other than Jesus? By the end of the book, you truly empathize with the burden this man carried as "God's chosen," frought with self-doubt and at times feeling like he was losing his mind; wanting desparately to live the "normal" life of a husband and father. A very sophisticated take on "torment" of divine inspiration and spiritual fortitude in the face of rationality. While it didn't make me want to go to church, it did bring me that much closer to the religion with which I was raised. Kind of ironic, as the Vatican had such a freakout when the movie came out in the early nineties. Had folks paid more attention to Kazanzakis' purpose- to humanize Christ's passion- rather than the fact that Willem Defoe gets laid on the big screen- this book would be part of the Christian literary canon.

delightfully, shockingly, wicked with fabulously dark illustrations. i'd never read these nursery rhymes to children tho.
one of the few books i actually enjoyed in high school.
There are tons of great urban fantasy series on the market right now, and I’m here to say Diana Pharaoh Francis’ Horngate Witches series is one of them. The first book in the series is Bitter Night. It introduces the world building and the main character of the series, Max. It is told in third person and bounces between Max’s point of view and that of a Shadowblade of equal statute who she is brought into contact with, Alexander. It’s a dark, bloody world filled with betrayal, and I loved every minute of it. I was pissed with Max at the unfairness which fills the world and I felt betrayed with her as she remembered her life before her best friend turned on her. Bitter Night is a story which gathers momentum as it’s told. New characters are continually added to the story, and most are drawn to Max. Despite the dark world and her ability to only be outside at night, she is a ray of sunshine and hope. Mainly due to her intervention and influence several problems have been solved by the end of the story, but I have a favorite part which includes the quote above. That quote takes place at a pivotal moment and involves a character introduced toward the end of the story. As I closed the book I knew I was hooked, because there was something I needed to know… Scooper Speaks
