Interesting story, but I'm not quite sure this title deserves the label as a Christian novel. I won't recommend it to anyone.

blurb from the back of the book: "Ella Minnow Pea is a girl living happily on the fictional island of Nollop off the coast of S. Carolina. Nollop was named after Nevin Nollop, the author of the immortal phrase, 'The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.' The island's council bans the use of certain letters of the alphabet as they fall from a memorial statue of Nevin Nollop." A fun read.

There is an odd feel to this book. Perhaps because it is told in the present tense even though it is someone remembering the distant past. Jacob seems to drift through the circus. I get no feeling of emotion from him. He says he cares about the animals, but I get no feeling for that. There is little feeling for any true compatibility among any of these people other than we are told that certain ones are compatible. Characters behave inconsistently and sometimes (in the love scenes) speak like a B movie. I expected the bad guys to twirl their mustaches and demand that "you must pay the rent!" Also having two really really bad guys diffused their badness. Jacob's friends disappear from the narrative in a manner of speaking offstage--so that emotional impact is also lessened. The only part I really liked was the ending--although it's sunny escape seemed to have nothing in common with the rest of the book. The bare bones of the story was good enough--but the execution was both oddly overblown and too distanced.

Even though most of the time we try to run right by, as women in our society it's almost impossible to pass by a diet book without stopping to check it out. Like most of the others, Sexy Women Eat by Divya Gugnani stopped me in my tracks, but something is different now. After reading this book, I no longer need to buy any other diet books because I finally know that life is not about diets! Hallejulah! This book has made me realize that life is about finding a happy balance, and learning how to incorporate some easy tricks and awesome recipes into the balance is the only way to go. Sexy women eat. It's time to embrace who we are and eat what we want (in moderation) and leave starvation for the runway models. This is an easy, quick read that any woman will benefit from!

Works because it combines VN's ubersmart glittery prose with a buried central character whose fate exposes the fallacy that words are all that matter. A critique of America and Europe, of materialism, of romanticism, and too-willing readers. =Pale Fire= is crafted just as well, but never quite finds a heart to go with its smarts.
