** spoiler alert ** http://www.goodreads.com/images/layou... A nice bit of fluff romance, took two sittings to read it through. I liked how the neighbors all were hiding their 'identities' from the newbies. Good sherbet before I try to finish the Two Towers.

Can't get enough of the Travis Family. Hope there is a book about Joe soon!

Great memoir of the experiences of the 'Lost Boys' in Sudan. Important for people who forget how privileged they are. Also has a fairly good recap of the conflict.
I love Jayne Ann Krentz, but I just couldn't get into this one.
This is a prime example of the kind of book foisted upon high school students when they aren't old enough to appreciate it. If you hated it when you read it in high school, I strongly suggest you give it another chance.

Fascinating story that is impressive in the way it handles storytelling, POV, and overall structure. The way the story maps to the way the book itself is structured is extremely impressive. While not every POV is equally as interesting, I found most of the characters fascinating to read about and the story itself captivating enough that even the less interesting-to-me characters had neat things happening around them. The world-building is really well-done and I got the sense of a whole universe moving around behind the scenes in each of the sections.

"Truth is stranger than fiction" - I've often heard that phrase. And I found it applies to the story told by Susan Jane Gilman of her trip to China with a university friend Claire, some 23 years after it happened. Trying to figure out what caused the series of events in the book - the two 21-year old girls, or China itself - is not quite easy. Maybe it was the interaction of the two that was the key, or maybe it was that China in the mid-1980s was just a catalyst that would change these two girls in such different and dramatic ways. See the full review posted on my blog, http://www.bookbirddog.blogspot.com ======================================================== But honestly, folks, what would make two young college graduates from a fairly privileged and coddled background decide to go off to a country they know absolutely nothing about? Not about the food, the language, the culture, or even the conditions of living there for local people or for tourist? They are armed only with a Lonely Planet guide, obviously for seasoned travelers, as the guide recommends hotels/hostels that they find appalling and more like unliveable hovels. One of the girls speaks French, the other is into German philosophy. Why for their first trip abroad ever, would they not choose a foreign country where they know something of the culture and can at least speak a few words of the language? Blame it on their Ivy League university, which inculcated into their minds that being the cream of the crop intellectually, they could go out and make their mark on the world - any part of the world. Instead of being moved to poetry and philosophy, however, they find themselves spending all their time being practical - looking for food they can eat, a decent bed to sleep on, and a place "to pee." It would be funny if it weren't so sad.... Would-be travelers to foreign places can read this book and perhaps learn something before they take off, to avoid culture shock in its extreme form.
I enjoyed this book. I didn't figure out who the killer was until close to the end.

*** P R A C T I C E *** Main characters: Katniss, Peeta, Gale, Rue, and Prim Setting: In the future I loved this book!!! It takes place in a society where once a year 2 kids, a boy and a girl from each district have to go fight to the death on a TV show. The whole nation is watching and only one child is crowned victor. The concept is a little gruesome, but it doesn't really get too bad. This book is a high paced adventure, has a love triangle, and is science fiction. It is a page turner that is sure to have your attention! *** P R A C T I C E ***
