This books brings you through a very interesting journey of your relationship with Christ. It is insightful, practical, very interesting on certain topics like abandonement, God's Mercy and Love. It is terribly easy to read and very applicable to everyday life. Defintely worth a read and as it says, it's worth reading in a couple of days like during a retreat. You get the most out of it that way.

Not my usual genre to read, however, this was an extraordinary story of murder and mayhem that I really enjoyed. I think I was impressed with the handling of Ross's use of surrealism threaded through the book, from tropes of men feeling tiny in the company of women, imagining women larger than men, alluding to some of womens' powers, and mens' weanesses; to father abandonment issues as fear of family leadership, and mother and child deaths as anxiety over losing the sensitive mother side in the male child, bludgeoning of dogs, humans, imaginary and real...so very disturbing in parts, so very insightful in others. His handling of culture classes was informative from his standpoint as well, for example, how he voiced middle, lower, and upper classMEN, their specific issues of shame, pride, and reflections of themselves to themselves and their women. While some may feel the female characters not fleshed out as much as the males, I think Ross made a point with that, mostly because he told a TYPE of story, the story of marital complexities from the perspective of men; his use of surrealism was descriptive of men who do NOT understand women, and whose issues about prowess and control are issues of great anxieties. I began to find myself wondering if I really knew MY husband. A good entertaining read.

I saw another review that pretty much sums up my feelings. Haldeman's recent books have been breezy and interesting, but ultimately light. This reminded me a lot of Heinlein's teen books, except for the addition of some unnecessarily graphic sex. I don't have any problem with sex in fiction but this didn't seem to serve any purpose. I liked that the narrator was a teenage girl, and that she was an intelligent teenage girl without major hangups. That said, some of her actions -particularly when it came to love and sex - just didn't match her character, which I might chalk up to a middleaged guy writing from the perspective of the aforementioned girl. Other than that, it was a fun read.

Dont normally write much in my reviews. Feel I may have underrated this book. The writing is actually very good. Plot strand excellent. There is something in the execution that makes the narrative "jerky" like a hand held camera. Apart from this, the novel is a quirky tale of Henry who we learn very early, is dead. Novel uses flashbacks extensively accompanied by journal entries to fill gaps in Henry's life. Very poignant with traditional themes but innovatively explored such as mortality, life and death, the injustice of the death of youth vs the longetivity of parents, marital bliss, the inability or ability of animals to register familiarity with humans versus humans desire to feel an attachmen to animals. And I could go on. The High School English teacher part of me says to the librarian, buy this book but I feel not many will read it. Magic realism fans will get more out of this than lovers of other genres. Still nonplussed. Is it a great read or did the minor flaws in structure blur my view? I must admit that i read this in fits and starts due to work demands. Think I will revisit this book to test my judgement. To summarise, if you are a fan of magic realism, DEFINITELY read it... for others, only if you like quirky characters such as the dad who is totally immersed in his interest in jellyfish (?) or the one handed Benna and the list goes on.
