Excellent essays such as "Culture Industry Reconsidered" "The Schema of Mass Culture" etc. But the real rigorous essay is on "The Fetishization of Music and the Regression of Listening"

Introduction to humans with supernatural powers who have chosen the "night watch" or "day watch". There is an uneasy truce for a thousand years, good vs. evil. Excellent writing. Couldn't put it down.

I really enjoyed this book. It was an easy read, and had a real interesting story. I have always been in awe of women who can quilt, so when the author would have the characters discuss the technique I enjoyed learning. Others got bogged down by that part of the book.

A hilarious anecdotal memoir about the scrapes Chris Crutcher and his older brother would get into during childhood—the story about ‘esus is worth the price of the book. I met Chris during an author event a few years ago and shared a beer with him. He is a terrific writer and a very funny guy.

This slim volume is the last in the trilogy about David Kepesh, from The Professor of Desire and the Breast. I read the Breast, and I did not like it. This book, however, is fabulous. The story, with its themes of sex and mortality, has stuck with me. David Kepesh is older here, and begins his usual yearly affair with a hispanic woman. Normally rather detached, he becomes obsessed with her. I went to a massage therapist once, who believed that to change oneself, one could attempt change through the body, mind, or spirit. Can sex lead to true intimacy and change? The Sufi poet Rumi says, everytime a man and woman engage in sex, a child is created, even if normal conception does not take place. The child created between the two characters in the Dying Animal makes them form part of their identity based on their relationship, and pulls them together for this reason.

I'm re-reading this book for like the 400th time. It such a wonderful story. As I was reading, I was reflecting on the very magickal trip Alora and I took to England a few years back. I bought her a copy of this book, and while we were staying in a small youth hostel in Cornwall, we were getting ready to sleep one evening, chatting up the other guest, a young schooteacher on holiday. I talked the schooltearcher into reading the first chapter of the story -- for two selfish reasons. One, she had that delicious English schoolteacher accent that was perfect for the story and I love to be read to, and two, she was looking for good books to introduce to her students and had never encountered Susan Cooper's children's books. I knew, that by having her read it, both she and Alora would be hooked by this little story. It is probably my all-time favorite, even though I read it first about 30 years ago.
