I am not the smartest person in the world, and even that admittance is very generous . I am not even close enough to the sort of intelligence that is needed to explain the importance of reading this book. If to only illustrate how moved and awed I was by Kundera's writing I will share this very brief anecdote: I read this novel while living in London. My friends were away on vacation and I was among the only people in the flat. I picked up this book on a rather dull and lonely day and set about reading it. Later that night my other flatmate came home and asked if I would like to accompany him to some bar. Though I hadn't seen people in days, though I had taken all my meals in my room, though I hadn't even left my flat in the last 42 hours; I told my flatmate and friend that I couldn’t join him. I was in the middle of something too important to put down.

ان المقاييس في عالمنا تتغير تدريجيا فلا تستطيع التفرقه بين العاقل والمجنون بل اوشك ان يكون اعقل العقلاء مجنونا في قرننا هذا .. مالذي نفعله لنحافظ على آخر قطرة ماء في وجوهنا امام من يعمل على - تجفيف - وجوهنا باستمرار بآلاته المجففه المتطورة .. ان الحرب على الاسلام ليست حربا جديدة , بل ان الاسلام في حرب منذ ظهورة على البشريه .. والحرب ليست مفهوما جديدا للمسلمين حيث انها كانت صديقتهم طوال تاريخهم فلم تخلو سنه من معركه .. ولم يزل المسلمون في حرب لحمايه رسالتهم قبل حمايه كرامتهم .. وسيحمونها بدم قلوبهم ولا ريب في ذلك .. حيث ان عقيدهم متجذرة في قلوبهم وليست في عقولهم .. ان الاعلام يعلب دورا كبيرا في تكوين عقولنا و بالطبع طريقه نظرنا للأشياء من حولنا .. فهل تسائلنا يوما كيف يعيش اخواننا في القرى البعيدة عنا.؟ واي عذاب واي الم يعتصرهم يوميا امام مشاهد لا يقوى العقل البشري السليم على تحملها ..الا ويفقد معها صوابه أو حياته .. ان كثير من المسلمين يتعذبون و يفقدون عائلاتهم واحبائهم و أرجلهم و أيديهم ! والسبب الوحيد الذي لأجله يعذبون هو انهم مسلمين . أي حرب وحشيه هي التي يشنها الشيطان علينا .. على مايبدو ان المجنون قديما هو مايعرف بالعاقل الآن .. لكن ماذا لو جن عاقلنا الآن انعده مجنونا ؟ ان رويه محمد جربوعه هي كالشمعه التي انارت جانبا مظلما من الصورة التي لم اعتقد دوما انها بهذا السوء او بهذة البشاعه , ان الاعلام يسعى دوما للتعتيم , لذلك فإن حاجتنا لمثل هذة الشموع تعد ضرورة في نظري .. و كان الله في عون المسلمين ..

** spoiler alert ** Humbert Humbert never consummated his love for Annabel Leigh as a child and is therefore obsessed by nymphets (girls 9-13). He moves from Paris to New England to write and ends up living with Charlotte Haze and her daughter Dolores (Lolita) who is 12. He's smitten. Humbert ends up marrying Charlotte (she loves him and wants him to love her or leave) who dies suddenly when she discovers Humbert secret in his diary and flees. Humbert gets Lolita from summer camp and roams the country with her (sexual affair ensues) while being pursued by someone who turns out to be Lolita's drama teacher she also is having an affair with. Lolita finally escapes with him (Clare Quilty). In the end, Clare won't commit to Lolita alone so she leaves him and winds up married and pregnant to a nice but dull fellow. HH gives them the money and property that is rightfully theres, begging Lolita to come be with him once more - she refuses. Humbert kills Quilty and dies awaiting trial. Themes: tragedy, the effects of a first love, word play, taboo sexual relations, guilt of robbing childhood away Interesting that some critics say Lolita took advantage of Humbert and not the other way around. This story is extremely engaging and haunting. Very ironic and there are almost more likable qualities in Humbert than Lolita, though that doesn't excuse his behavior. The idea that this stems from his childhood love and loss is interesting (or an excuse - HH is not exactly trustworthy). Tastefully done as far as the sex (nothing blatant) and I loved the word play. Difficult to interpret morally.

Tough to read because of all the details, but I'm glad BTK was arrested! I live near Wichita and watched this all unfold. Beattie did a good job of telling the story and showing the effects that this had on the community and on the families involved.
