Intersting book. Almost demands a re-read - but entertaining enough without one. This book is further proof that there is more than one way to skin a cat. If you like Garland's stuff- check it out. It ain't the best, but you could do worse. The prose and setting seem very much like Ballard.

Starting this book, I had low expectations. I, like many teens, went through a Holocaust fiction phase about two years ago when we read "Night" for English class, and I am a little bit tired of the genre, although it is an emotional and delicate one. "The Book Thief", about a young German girl named Liesel who lives with her accordion-playing foster father and insulting but loving foster mother on Himmel Street during World War II, didn't impress me too much at first. Actually, the writing itself, which is very ambitious and abstract, impressed me quite a bit, but the story did not. Eventually, it finally got me, and I gave in to the sheer excellence of a good story. Did I laugh when a young, quirky boy named Rudy painted himself black with coal dust and pretended to be Jesse Owens? Yeah. Did my heart tug a little when Max, a Jewish man the Hubermann's hide in their basement, wrote Liesel a book over the painted pages of "Mein kamp"? Oh yeah. This book was a great story, but it took me a long time to get into only because it is A) a long book and B) YA fiction, which tends to be somewhat slow for me sometimes. But I'll be honest- I was nearly sobbing at the end. The end really hits you hard, believe me. If you cry when reading, have TWO boxes of tissues handy, and definitely give this book a try.

I first read this book in 6th grade for this gifted lit class I had been placed into (toot!). I've been on this kick lately of remembering the books from that class as these great works of literature that really opened my eyes to the world of books that was out there. Others included in the list would be The Gammage Cup, The Giver, Fahrenheit 451, Bridge to Teribithia, and countless short stories. I really liked A Wrinkle in Time when I read it then but I appreciate it more now. The copy I picked up had an explanation of the science behind the ideas in it that was really very interesting (I've recently picked up theoretical physics as a hobby?). I kind of forgot how focused it is on the ideas that "love fixes everything" and "brats are annoying," but for a kid those are some pretty good ideas. Especially the latter. Man, kids can be pretty bratty.

I still do't know what to think of this one. It ekes a bit of ascetic interest out of me and I'm not sure what to do with it. It also, being what it is, contains some more esoteric language which is difficult for the layperson to make sense of, but all in all is a demonstration that supreme enlightenment is not beyond anyone who decides simply to pursue, single-mindedly, that end. Now for the rest of us, I'm not sure...

To sum it all up, multiracialism/post-Blackness becomes antiblackness when Blackness identifies and defines itself and petitions for a list a of grievances within, or because of, multiracialism.

A compelling, heart-wrenching read. I don't know what it was, really. It was so somber, like the lights of the reaaaal world dimmed and life muted while I read. Always a good quality in a book :) Sweethearts really pulled me in.

Good read, this book really gives you a sense of what it must have been like to survive hurrican katrina.

An Artist of the Floating World made for an entertaining, and often thought-provoking, read but wasn't up to the standard of Ishiguro's other works like The Remains of the Day or Never Let Me Go. It gives you a lovely, nostalgic view of the Japan that was, prior to the militarism of the 1930s and its consequent involment in WWII. Despite being central to the book, I don't think Ishiguro gives a full airing to ideas about the consequences of the particularly aggressive variant of nationalism that was pursued in Japan. Political ideas are dealt with quite lightly, and perhaps that appeals to readers who prefer the psychological realism of Ishiguro's writing. Personally I would have preferred to see a more thorough development of the complex and conflicting ideas of shame, face-saving, guilt, pride, and unacknowledged history which seem latent in a lot of discussions about Japan's role in WWII. Overall, it's an entertaining book but it fails to explore a lot of areas of great potential.
Excellent! Look forward to reading the third book.

The tale of an ex-Olympian gymnast turned actress who gets magically transported to a world in desperate need of a hero. A mixture of Buffy and Xena, with some truly original ideas thrown in. This book is out of print but can be read free at the publisher's website ([http://www.webscription.net/pc-458-1-...]). I've always had mixed feelings about this author and this book was no exception. The idea was a good one and I did enjoy it, but I felt as if she was trying too hard at times. Still, can't beat the price.
