Ellroy's a fair stylist, but this book left a lot to be desired. I felt like there was too much of a confluence between the characters' issues and the author's - and that was before reading the afterword in which Ellroy details his issues.

This book would be interesting to anyone curious about the human mind. Other than gathering anecdotal information and getting a better feeling for all that the human mind has to do for us to accomplish all that we need to do everyday, this book is worth the read because the author is so blithely and caring-ly condescending. One could get angry at the author for this but he's so guileless it would be pointless and it ends up being more entertaining than anything else.

I "read" this book for the first time when I was about ten. Okay, I looked at the pictures and wondered, and wondered... I re-read it periodically, and still gape, but this time at the language and structure and fire inside. I can see why "Fortune" didn't take it as an article, though - Agee went where we wanted with the prose. A stunning book.

This is one of those books that I find myself thinking about a lot, and referencing in conversation. Malcolm Gladwell is pretty awesome at taking super complex sciency things and writing about them in a way that makes sense.

Much better read than the movie. I enjoyed the book. Tear jerker at the end.

I struggled a bit with how high to rate this book. It's definitely not a 4 or 5 star book, but at the same time I can't help but feel that other reviews I read were excessively critical of this book -- and that they were excessively critical largely because they excepted it to be more than it was. So in the end I rated it as a 3 star book (rather than a 2 star book), because, though I came in with low expectations, it met those expectations and entertained me for what it's worth. It's like watching a Bruce Willis action movie -- if you go in expecting an Academy Award winning movie with an incredible sound-track and cinematography, Oscar winning actors, and insights into the human condition, then you're going to be pretty disappointed; but if you go in expecting some explosions, bad one-liners, and an hour and a half of entertainment, then you'll probably go home happy... So my assessment of the book? I actually agree with most of the criticism of the book. It's definitely a Young Adult book, and one written by a teenager, by which I mean: it is largely derivative of other works, and many of the motifs, plots, and characters are borrowed; the plot is moved forward by improbably coincidences and random decisions portrayed as obvious choices; and (perhaps the biggest "Young Adult" characteristic) the story sounds like a school boy fantasy (a normal boy turns into -- in a few short months -- a sword master, magic wielding, dragon riding hero who fights titanic battles and falls in love with elven princesses). However, unlike most of the reviewers, I expected it to be a Young Adult book. And I don't hold that against it. So the short version of my review?: It's not Tolkien, but it entertained me.
