The Comedy of Errors is perfect, but it is perfection of a low order. In this early play, Shakespeare sets out to master the complex mechanisms and simple humor of farce, and succeeds completely. It is enjoyable and well-crafted--like a really good episode of The Beverly Hillbillies or Three's Company--and represents an important early step on Shakespeare's journey as an absolute master of drama in all its forms.

See, this is why I read YA book blogs! I wouldn't have even heard of this awesome-looking book if I hadn't read about it on the YA YA YAs.

An exemplary monograph: tight, cohesive, well-edited, thoroughly documented and footnoted. Satterfield's expertise is library special collections, and several of the photographs are from his own collection of Modern Library works.

Levenson presents an excellent introduction to the Jewish faith as it is represented in scripture. In Sinai & Zion he takes a clear look at the two mountains and the traditions which arose from Jewish experience of them and details their symbolism, meaning, and theological trends which arose: Sinai, the mountain of the conditional covenant, Moses, and the twelve tribes and the complex relationship it has to Zion, the mountain of David, the unconditional covenant, and the southern monarchy. He offers a detailed analysis of their relationship, the subtleties of their interactions, and a needed corrective to a predominant view of biblical Judaism by contemporary christian scholars, theologians and many lay people.

I knew a bit about Dorian Gray before I read the book, but it was great to see where the character really came to life in Oscar Wilde's novel. On occasion the writing was a little tough to get into, but no matter how dull a passage seemed, it always ended up having a purpose to further the plot, and each chapter ended in such a way that I wanted to immediately continue. I also felt like there could have been so much more to this story! Time flew by between the chapters, and I wish Wilde wrote a little more about Dorian's life and the things he did that made his portrait so appalling. However, the few instances he did give were more than enough excitement to relay the changing of the picture.

It takes some effort to get into it, but seems to become more interesting the farther you go.

I literally could not put this book down. I could really get into the story, which had my jaw dropped to my chin on more than one occasion (yeah, you got me, I have never even seen a screen interpretation of this book) due to the surprise turns that it took. I would think that it was quite ahead of its times when it was written. And despite its "classic" language, I found that I could follow it quite easily. I am sad to say it took me so long to read this book.
