I was planning a unit for my brilliant 9th graders about the Middle East last week, and found this on my shelf. I thought I might be able to flip through and find a brief, accessible description of something they'd find interesting. 2 hours later, I was eating a gyro, listening to Iranian folk music, and still reading this book. It motivated me to try to create a perfect unit. It's accessible, not simplistic.

Just took this out of the library along with other books of hers. It looks fascinating. In the middle of this now. I like her fiction better but this is excellent. Excellent book. WHen I read the poems that are NOT specifically mythic, I expected to be disappointed, but they're also excellent. It comes as no suprise that this she is an excellent poet, becuase, as I learned from both "Orphan's Tales" books, Catherynne M Valente has full acess to her own personal muse. And a strange and dark use it is. She is truly the High Priestess of Story.
