I read this book over the summer, for fun. It was much better than catcher in the rye. The story is about Gene and Phineas (Finny) who start out as highschool juniors at a new England boys private school. Finny is everything gene is not- hot, athletic, popular… Gene is smart, but you can see why he'd be jealous of Finny. Finny becomes his best friend and together they do fun stuff together, like play a Phineas invented game called blitzball, skip school to go to the beach, and jump from a tree into a river. That last activity is very important in he book. Gene thinks Phineas is trying to befriend him to distract him from his studies so Gene won't be good at the one thing he's good at, school. One day when he and Phineas are on the tree, Gene shakes the tree to make Phineas fall. Luckily phineas doesn't die, but he is so badly injured that he has trouble walking and he certainly will never play sports again. Sports mean the world to Phineas. This goes to show that one change CAN change everything. I'm not going to spoil the ending but nothing is ever the same between Phineas and Gene. There is that underlying detail that haunts them both. Neither of them confronts the other afterward but they both sorta know inside that that fall from the tree was no accident.

Update: Had to return this to the library before I finished it, but I'm going to check it out again. I was about one-third of the way through and enjoying it. In addition to learning about her childhood and early adulthood, I learned a lot about D.C. in the 1940s and 50s. Reading this on the recommendation of Scott.

I have trouble deciding between 4 stars and 5. Would this book have been more amazing if I hadn't read the entire thing in one day? Or does the fact that I read it so fast add to its score? I don't know. I know I was really, really enjoying it until I finished it around midnight and then started to get concerned about the afterlife. I think I like it. It can be a nice fiction book and I don't have to worry about dead people being confined to their cemeteries or figuring out how to get married in Dad's.

Intriguiging argument, though not always backed up in the best way. Made me think alot about my own behavior.

I had low expectations coming into this book, having not really got on with the previous couple of books, and was pleasantly surprised - this was actually entertaining with a plot! I liked that Sookie wasn't so much of a doormat in this book when her "friends" did stupid things. I'm hoping the next book shows us consequences of events in this. I'm also starting to wonder how Charlaine Harris will end this series - will there be an HEA, and if so, how...
I don't what it was about this book, but something just didn't do it for me. I was confused about the ending, I felt like I wanted more than the book was giving, but perhaps this is exactly what Rice was intending to evoke in her reader's. An interesting take on the series that makes a tangential turn to even darker matters.
