I read this book the summer before going to college and loved it. I then read a few more of Kundera's books. I can't really identify what hit me about them--not so much the plot as the characters' layers struggles.

I read this after the Checklist Manifesto, which I think is a better book, but again, I'm really impressed with the clarity of his thinking and writing. The afterword is something I need to keep a copy of. Five pieces of advice designed to help each of us become positive deviants: 1. Ask unscripted questions in order to keep the conversation going. 2. Don't complain. It's boring, it doesn't solve anything, and it will get you down. 3. Count something. If you count something you find interesting, you will learn something interesting. 4. Write something. Ass some small observation about your world. 5. Change. Become an early adopter. "So find something new to try, something to change. Count how often you succeed and how often you fail. Write about it. Ask people what they think. See if you can keep the conversation going." Once again, this surgeon is writing something from which any one can learn. I can't wait to read Complications and see if it too teaches me as much and holds my interest so strongly.

Well written, interesting and insightful. I have always felt sorry for Catherine but GT presents her - accurately - as a stubborn, religious woman whose attitudes in no small way contributed to much misery in England and of course the Reformation. Would history have been different if she had simply retired to a convent?

Portrays a young woman's life between the wars in Germany.
Good book. Typical Horwitz fair. Well researched. Very readable. Definitely for people who enjoy history in an easy to approach format.

Love the turn of events in this story! Bill is hardly in this book, but I think that it's a nice break. I also think this book is less predicatable than some of the others. The plots are getting increasingly complicated and magical.

Never so glad to finish a book, and yet disappointed for it nonetheless. I am not familiar with The Salvation Army and found little on this book to help me. I now know the founders were the Booths and they'd it children continued their work. TSA was begun as a revival type venture and developed into a social organization unlike others. Yet I still don't know their objective .
