Jeffrey Eugenides is an amazing author. He is disturbed, somewhat perverted, and always trying to shock the reader, but his writing is really great. The voice in this book was really unique, and as always with Eugenides (at least with the two books I've read), the details are explained in almost painful reality, and the story is weird but thought-provoking and memorable.

** spoiler alert ** Hmm.... well, I liked the book, but there were times I felt like "okay come on get on with it" and I didn't feel like there was enough resolution with Mr. Harvey. I wanted more, I went crazy when Ruth and Ray were at the sink hole and STILL no resolution there. But overall I enjoyed the book.

Tough stuff, written well. Also, he lived in Pgh for most of his childhood so it was geographically relevant.

Yalom is a master therapist. This book is a case study of a set of patients, written as a set of short stories. Yalom is most famous for his use of self in theapy and the exploration of existensial issues. You get a taste of his psychology in this book. I read recently that Yalom sees generativity as the natural progression of narcissim. I see both elements in his psyche in this book. I believe he's moving in the write direction. Great read and a good starter book if you want to read Yalom.

This is ridiculous, I finished it in less than a day! Yes, it's that interesting and overwhelming, no matter if you've read the earlier version of this book - A Brief History of Time, or how many times you've watched Stephen Hawking's popular series on BBC. This is Stephen Hawking’s way of describing gravitational attraction of composite bodies. And you recognize good old Stephen Hawking humour when he introduces Isaac Newton by stating that "Isaac Newton was not a pleasant man." A Briefer History of Time is much simpler than its parent. It's a tiny bit shorter, more condensed, with more accessible images than those diagrams in the earlier version. On the contrary, it contains more modern theories that weren't much developed back in the 80s. There's a chapter devoted to the string theory. Correct me if I'm wrong but there was nothing about string theory in A Brief History of Time (maybe only a slight mention but nothing more). In general I'd say this is like a children's book compared to the 1987 version, so if you're not really a science person I'd recommend to read only this one (I liked the detailed discussion of Friedmann's 3 models of the universe in the first edition, as well as singularities and possibilities of time travel). PS. I don't know why but quantum mechanics and the string theory still give me the chills (comparable to a solid chill a good Stephen King horror book would give me. I'm doing it again, aren't I?)

A good mesh of religion and Science. Those who are still searching for God it would convenient to pick up a rock and find God there. I haven't seen God yet. I know though that I will see Him in Heaven. So, until then I seek his face. I don't have any expectation to wake up one morning to headlines in the newspaper that science has found God. I'm okay with this.

the language is beautiful, but i never felt invited to participate in journey's delicately constructed world. instead, the entire book i felt like an outsider looking in, yet that didn't feel organic to the work. i'd like to read more of journey's poetry, because it promises something intriguing and unique. her blend of the personal and the baroque is refreshing.

For some reason I kept visualizing Montag as Ray Romano's brother in that sitcom, and I'm not terribly proud of that, but I can't say that image took away from the intensity of the book. Story kept shooting past the writing.
Lame.
