Finished 5-28-09- Ms Frank can weave a story! If you love the beach, extended family, with a dash of humor and a good cry...her books are for you. Set in the lowcountry outside Charleston her stories are breezy, fun, and heartwarming. Anna Abbott is in her late thirties and finally getting a chance to be on her own. Hers is the story of a mature woman who sets out on an adventure of discovery and finds it with the help of family and friends. It was a great read.

I have been reading all the Tom Perrotta books and I think this one might be the saddest, in terms of what it reveals about the nature of dreams and in this case, not knowing when to let them go. Many of the later books involve some middle aged person undergoing a crisis (with the exception of Joe College, which is about a 20-something) but this one is about a somewhat younger character and has the funny yet depressing theme of growing up and getting over your adolescence. This is the story of Dave, guitarist in the wedding group the Wishbones, who somewhat impulsively decides to ask his girlfriend of fifteen years to marry him. The fact that he has been with the same girl...on and off...for so long indicates a serious problem, an inability to get over himself and commit to something other than his music. Additionally, there is his affair with a woman in the city, which tests and challenges his upcoming marriage and makes him wonder why he is going through with it. He is hanging on to his dream of being a rock star when the dream has long since moved past him. It is heartbreaking, but you spend more time laughing out loud at the way the story unfolds. I enjoy Tom Perrotta's books so much I almost hate that I read them so fast. I also think that he has an excellent sense for writing about relationships, often nailing the many feelings we go through when we are in one. Soooo good! Bad Haircut next!

An awesome start to a cool new series based on a neat, unique premise of three sisters, triplets, descendents of the gorgon Medusa, who have special powers they use to fight monsters of mythology such as minotaurs, manticores, gryphons, etc in today's world. Why they have to fight these monsters is not totally clear, but hopefully in the next book more will be explained as well as more about who is helping them and who is hindering them.

Although I admire the author's ambition to experiment (and his willingness to be silly), I felt only two of the eleven stories in the collection actually worked.

A superb and detailed look at the difference between training a martial art and real life violence. It covers legal and psychological aspects, the freaky affects of adrenaline and how the monkey brain works against you in a surprise assault. Sobering but also fascinating mix of anthropology, psychology, physiology, law and fight mechanics mixed in with an amazing depth of experience. Essential reading if you have any interest in self-defense at all.

A little slow to start but then it hooked me in. It was weird, frightening and lovely. I look forward to seeing the movie when it comes out

Emma and Eadric are humans again and must help Grassina to get her true love back. Haywood was turned into an otter years before by Grassina's mother. She didn't think he wasa suitable suitor for her daughter so thought this was the best way to get rid of him. She made the recipe for the cure deliberately difficult so he wouldn't be able to turn back. But now Grassina has found him again she is determined not to let him go. So with Emma and Eadric's help they set off to find four magical items needed to turn him back. This book seemed slightly slower than the first, it was more detailed and deeper explained. There was a lot of back story involving the curse and Grassina's mother which was quite detailed and slowed the pace of the story quite a bit. Eadric seems to do nothing but eat and whine in this one. But Emma goes from strength to strength. I liked her a lot more in this book. There was a lot of action scenes and exciting twists but they were in between the slower parts so the book just seemed to drag a little bit. However saying that it is only 292 pages so it still didn't take me that long and overall the plot line was good. I love the devotion between Haywood and Grassina, and the twist at the end was very good. Overall it is still a good book and worth a read, it's just a bit slow in places. You may find yourself skimming bits.
Great insight into mid-20th century South. Great storyline.

Unhappy with the path Hamilton had chosen for Anita Blake, I'd all but given up on these books, but picked this one up on a whim. And good news, fans - the first 2/3rds of the book is VINTAGE Anita in all her butt-kicking, paranormal-investigating badassery. A wonderful return to form, and really fun. Unfortunately, it seems like Hamilton just got sick of writing it or something, because the ending is schlocky and doesn't deliver. A real shame, because mostly the book was so fun.
Boy are we lucky to be women living in the US! A facinating tale about two women in Afghanistan and the personal/political challenegs they face and overcome. Wow.
