An interesting book based on the life of William Irwin, an Irish immigrant to Australia. The book traces his life in Ballarat first as a prospector then as a publican. The aspect I found most touching however was the gradual loss of connection with his family (his sister in particular) back in Ireland as his life moved further and further away from theirs. Sad to think of the families that were broken apart by the terrible poverty in Ireland as so many young people emigrated to Australia and America.

Both funny and moving, Christopher Buckley remembers his parents in all their wonderful and exasperating glory. Told with affection, irony and occasional moments of bittersweet. An all-around terrific read that highlights the reality that family, warts and all, is really the bedrock of our lives. P.S. even if you're not a fan of William F. Buckley and his considerably right of center politics (which, incidentally, his son does not share), you should read this book. There's something so genuine and human in this portrait -- it reminds you that people are vastly more complicated than we sometimes allow them to be: the Boogeyman of the Right is also just a dad, with the same worries that all dads have, and the same embarassing habits that drive their sons to distraction.
found this on a sidewalk sale for a dollar and was just looking for something to cruise through. what do you expect from a book written by two prison inmates? one of which quit the book in the middle because she realized that mary kay is a total nut bag.

I had to read this book for English class in High School. I would never choose to read it again. It was terribly depressing and a little too graphic at parts for me.
I really enjoyed this book. The mixture of mystery and police thriller with literary knowledge and a bit of science fiction made it very enjoyable.

I thought the question Maclaren offers are interesting, but I felt like he was trying way too hard to be funny and relevant. Comes off far too arrogant.
I fell in love with Matthew and Diana when I read A Discovery of Witches. It was one of those books that I picked up one night and thought "I'll read a little before I go to bed" and the next thing I knew, it was 7am and I was finishing the book. Shadow of Night didn't grab me quite as hard, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I was fascinated by Matthew and Diana's sojourn into 1590, and I loved the cameo appearances by some very well-known people - William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, and Sir Walter Raleigh, among others. I loved Goody Alsop, and I loved the concept of Diana's familiar and the fact that she's a Weaver. I was slightly disappointed in the ending, because they still didn't actually have Ashmole 782. Finding out just exactly what that book is, and what it can tell them, is the biggest mystery for me - and the biggest reason that I'm waiting on pins and needles for the third installment in the trilogy!

I read this book in 2 days because I wanted to figure out who Michael was- real or imaginary. At first I didn't know, so I was intrigued. Really enjoyed the story, but it reminded me a little of that movie "City of Angels" with Meg Ryan. One section was the bedroom scene, but I was thankful it wasn't too graphic. Quick easy read, cute little love story. I'm a sucker for love stories.

This was one of the first historical fiction books that I read and I learned something about myself from it. What is that you ask? Well that I love 17th and 18th cetury European novels.
