Humor me on this one. I read the first five of this 11-part series as a kid and never knew that another six books were written (in the 60s). I recently bought five of the books and I've been poking around the internet for over a year to find this one for less than 100 bucks (unbelievable). Finally. I found this on Abe and ordered away. Its so satisfying to read the last one in the series! Definitely for ballet-lovers only, but Estoril does a nice job of painting a picture of the jealousy and cattiness that is (unfortunately) a part of the ballet world. She also shows the joy.

So I read this book again yesterday, and it reminds me again of just how much I love this series. Lovelace manages to create a wonderful depiction of high school life in the early 1900s (much of it based on her own life), full of fun, friends, and adventure; you just wish you could have really been there to be a part of it. ps -- I can't stand the newer covers - try and borrow an old copy from the library; they have the original Vera Neville illustrations...
There are few books in which I would recommend to anyone and this one falls into that category. I think everyone should read this and it would be even better if we all put it's principles into practice. Too much of life gets filled with things beyond our control but learning the art of complaining in a productive manner can actually cause change to happen. This is a very easy and short read packed full of psychological tidbits as to why we complain the way we do and how to adjust that to make it productive. There was enough humor thrown into to also make it interesting and fun to read. The reason I didn't give it a full five stars is simply because I would've liked to have seen more examples of specific complaints broken down into the "complaint sandwich". The tools are provided but more examples always help yours truly. This will be the book I hope to get several copies to pass out to friends. Happy complaining.

Wow! This was a great book. While it was all good the last third of the book left me on a non-stop roller coaster ride. The characters never seem to do what you would expect and it makes it all the better. I listened to the audiobook version and the narrator, the same one that did The Hunger Games is awesome. I did not like the way the book ended though. It's blatantly obvious that book two and three should be combined because the story doesn't have a neat tidy ending, yet instead you feel like the next chapter is just continued into the next book.

This is an essential read for anyone interested in Tarkovsky's films. It's insightful to read about what his philosophy toward film was. I revere Tarkovsky's films, as well as those of his protege Sokurov, and other filmmakers with similar style, Bela Tarr for example. If you're interested The Mirror and The Sacrifice are both outstanding films. For Sokurov, check out Mother and Son, and for Tarr you should see Werckmeister Harmonies.

This is a very insightful book for those of us who love Jane Austen. A memoir from an English literature scholar whose life was changed for the better by reading and studying Jane Austen. The author starts out as an arrogant know it all and ends up as a real person showing how lessons from Jane Austen novels apply to real life. Really enjoyed this book.

Similar in style to most early 1900s children's literature with two angelic children who meet misfortune with stoicism and "godliness" thereby converting the lesser evils and triumphing over the main evil (in this story that takes the form of a gypsy. Lots of stereotypes of the Rom, but at least two of them help the children escape their kidnapping and become "honest citizens."
