Although I found the author completly self-absorbed and full of complaints about a situation she created I really loved this book. I wanted her life- to be able to take a year off to travel and find myself. To eat my way through Italy, meditate in India and find love in Bali.

On the surface, this is a fun little novel that explores the mystery of Richard III and the princes in the tower. However, looking more closely, it also dissects the process of historians, how history (with the emphasis on "story") filters into the public consciousness, and the willingness of people to believe what they are told. This made for a particularly interesting read in our current political climate of lies and half-truths, even with some arcane British parliamentary expressions to look up. As always, Tey's language is beautiful and characterizations are strong. I still can't believe I had never heard of her; Tey really needs to be rediscovered.

I finally read this after having it recomended to me by two friends on diffrent occassions. I will share this book with my two boys when I feel they are old enough. Some amazing lessons about human relationships in this book.

Not necessarily one of his more well-known books, and it may be a bit melodramatic, but it has also stayed with me more than some of his better-known, (perhaps) better-written stories.
Catherine M. is the editor of some high-brow French art magazine. She's also quite a slut. (Not calling her a slut disparagingly, but with love and affection.) The book is about her extraordinary sexual adventures. She's obviously quite intelligent and knows how to write, but the book is dull and unexciting. She even fails to be a rigorous intellectual and give a good psychological analysis of her behavior. Her stories get boring and repetitive very quickly.

I found the first half of this book fascinating and inspiring. Unfortunately, the second half left somewhat of a sour taste in my mouth. I felt like there was too much of a political agenda thrown into it in the latter portion. I wish the author would have been less indulgent in those opinions because this book could have been amazing. Overall, I'm so grateful that I read it because it personalized Pakistan and Central Asia in a way that I feel like I can now visualize better what life is like there. The people who live there, the landscape, and the lifestyle because more real to me. I agree that Mortenson's wife should be given an award because I have no idea how a wife could be so supportive. Amazing.
The author Stef Penney identifies herself as an agoraphobic screenwriter who lives in Edinburgh, yet she pulls off this amazing novel set in Canada in 1867. Amazing. She weaves many characters' lives together, so this is a book to read in a short span of time, not one to read a chapter here and there over a month or two. Part thriller, part mystery, part historic novel, laced with issues like drug addiction, madness, and personal identity, this author is able to deftly touch on many subjects. A very good read indeed!
