A long running anthology series with stories set during the Man-Kzin Wars in Larry Niven’s Known Space universe. Niven started this thing up because while the Wars were very significant in the history of Known Space, he himself was not adept at writing about conflict. Niven has written some of the stories but most are by other authors. The writing ranges from average to excellent. Recommended if you are a fan of Known Space. http://www.books.rosboch.net/?p=1026

This is one of the most well-written young adult books I've ever read. They don't write 'em like this anymore! There's a reason Susan Cooper won the Newbery Medal for this. Her incredible, melodic descriptive language and her ability to interweave history, mythology, legend, and good old-fashioned fiction bring this book far beyond a traditional "boy with special powers" book. If you appreciate the English language and if you have an interest in history and legend, this one is for you. Susan Cooper did her research--one can look up the background of many of the people, places, and mythical figures and see how they relate to the history of what is now the United Kingdom. I realize that many are skeptical about this genre after the Harry Potter craze; however, this is one of the classics. It's next to The Chronicles of Narnia on my bookshelf. P.S. If you're looking to change formats, I would also recommend the audiobook of this (read by Richard Mitchley, who speaks Welsh and who thus makes this reading even more interesting).

Well, now I know a ton about the history of childbirth that I didn't know before. Some of it was incredibly interesting and some of it seemed incredibly pointless. I was especially frustrated by the questions the author posed in the first chapter of the book, which I didn't feel were answered at all in the end, except for a pat "If I could do it over, I wouldn't change a thing." Worth reading, though, if the subject interests you.

great read. highly entertaining - and I had to write down some of the wonderful insights Eugenides brings to light about daily life, people around you, your parents, etc. This story was unpredictable, which I loved. And it spanned the lives of several generations of the Stephanides family, which was so thoroughly satisfying. loved it.

This book was interesting, but you really need to be alert when reading it. When I have more time to dedicate to reading, I would like to re-read this book.

This continues the story of Asher and follows him as a more settled, confident and famous adult artist. He deals with the same struggles and brings in a new generation...I was glad there was a continuation to the first book. I really grew to love Asher and the Rebbe.

What an exciting read for big imaginations! The Folk of the Faraway Tree is an Enid Blyton tale, following the adventures of four children in a magical woods. At the heart of the woods is an enchanted tree which is the home of some intriguing characters and mysterious lands. The children soon explore the tree and it's inhabitants and adventure quickly unfolds. It appears clear that the author intended to captivate the imaginations of young children with this book. As I child, I can remember reading this book, and the vivid pictures that played in my mind are still very clear today. I really felt like I was accompanying the children in their adventures, and often wished that one day I too would find an enchanted wood and a magical tree to visit! The children in this book are, in my belief, model children. Their friendliness and good will to all the characters in the book is lesson to young minds about how to treat others well. Enid Blyton introduces a naughty more spoilt character to the mix, to highlight the gentle natures of the well behaved Bessie, Fanny and Jo. For example when 'awfully stuck-up and spoilt' Connie comes to visit the children soon introduce friendship and kindness to her, and she soon learns that this more pleasant behaviour has more benefits that being disliked. The Folk of the Far away tree also has some other more intriguing characters; 'Dame Washalot' being my personal favourite. This character loves nothing more than to fill her day with washing clothes and throw the 'dirty soapy water' down the tree, with no consideration for anybody (or thing) that might be in its unexpected path. In my opinion, this character adds pure comical value to the story, particularly when unsuspecting individuals get completely drenched! This sort of character adds fun and laughter to the story and I can imagine if a child is being read to, both reader and listener can laugh together! This book is definately successful in captivating the mind of a young reader, the various magical lands are exciting and imaginative. It is also a success in the amount of different characters and adventures that take place within the book, the mini-adventures are relatively small in length but there still remains continuity throughout which adds to the charm. I would recommend this book to children over the aged of 8, however I would warn children that some small parts of the vocabularly may be unfamiliar as the some of the expressions are rather dated! I would rate this as a book of five star quality. Overall a charming read!

I really appreciated this look at the events of September 11, 2001. Van Why talks about his experience on that day but also of the days following, how he and his fellow New Yorkers went about getting back to their lives. The world stopped...but then it had to start again, and how do you start again after something like that? This is by no means an exhaustive, in-depth disaster-survival story, but Van Why's account brought this story home to me in a way that nothing else had before. I've never been to New York, so the only mental images I have are sort of the movie versions of New York--the tall buildings, all the people on the sidewalks, the cabs, Wall Street. With all its millions of fashionable, never-sleeping, corporate-lunching people, New York always seemed a little unreal. Van Why's details of his everyday life though, things like eating lunch in a plaza, enjoying a few minutes of sunshine, watching the tourists take in the sights that he'd come to regard as part of everyday life? I could relate to that; I finally had a way to relate New York life to my island life and suddenly I could really imagine the contrast of living your life one minute and the world literally falling down around you the next in a way that I hadn't been able to before. While this book reminds us of all the terrible things that happened that day, it also highlights the ways in which the citizens of New York pulled together to help each other out, to offer each other comfort and support in a time of fear and confusion. this story is like one long runon sentence. this mother is convinced she's being attacked by a demon (but the real demon is her abusive boyfriend - uhm hello?). it was way too god-heavy for me.

I've probably read the series a good ten times in my life. His humor is so original and, just inescapable. Try not to laugh, you will fail. This series really helped me care for reading at a crucial time in my development. It made mee understand that it was important to be creative and to use your imagination. Also, the satire end of things really gave me a perspective about how things are really quite similar, no matter where you go. Now, grown and old, I can still go back and enjoy them over and over. It doesn't get old, and it never loses its message. A series for the ages.
