I love all of Jodi Picoult's books and this was no exception. A very fast moving story, although disturbing at times (like most of her books).

Interesting, popular writing on science. Chaos theory is real life.

After finishing McCarthy's No Country For Old Men and The Road, I felt like I was stunned for a day or so afterward. Add Blood Meridian to that list. At first, I thought this was going to be a Lonesome Dove-style western, but it's something far different. The descent into butchery by the Glanton gang in the desert is one of the most disturbing things I've read. And the Judge is now on my top 10 all-time fictional villian list.

I enjoyed reading this book because the character development was good and it's about a time and culture with which I am completely unfamiliar.

I think that I went into reading this with expecting it to be like Jane Eyre. It wasn't, obviously. I liked it and enjoyed it, but the characters got me really frustrated. My brain was thinking things such as, "Why don't you just do this?" but I liked it all the same. Emily Bronte's writing style is good, but she tends to jump around a bit. Back and forth. It's difficult to not stop and think "wait. what?" and go back and re-read something to make sure you got the jump in time.

I liked James's characters a little better in this one, but am not particularly crazy about the story in general. The clash between the American and European cultures is not as subtlety drawn as in many other of James works. I'm probably in a huge minority on this one and had read it a long time ago. I was hoping it would have gotten better as I had gotten older, but I did not find it that way. For James, I thought this a rather thin story, although likely scandalous at the time, and the characters weaker than some of the other James stories. I prefer The Aspern Papers and The American to this one. I also found the characters superficial and bloodless. There is such a coolness to James's work that I must attribute it to the times. It must have been very difficult to write what he wanted to write versus the constraints of the time. It would be too bad if this were the only James novel a person ever read. They would be off him forever, which would be too bad because other novels and novelettes are much better.
天很黑,但故事做得很好。 我先读过这一本书,在读完《膝盖上的秋天》之后不得不说,我发现这一本书不那么独特了。 作者有一些情节主题,她以不太吸引人的方式在两本书中都被击败。
